Susan Stanphill
There is often a story behind the person who walks through the door of therapy. For first responders, that story can include experiences that are difficult to put into words—moments of intense responsibility, loss, fear, or trauma that stay with you long after the shift ends. When you spend your career being the person others rely on, there may not always be much room to process what you have experienced yourself. Over time, that can show up as stress, frustration, emotional disconnection, difficulty being present with the people you love, or simply feeling unlike yourself. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), I am passionate about working with first responders who are ready to understand what they have been carrying and begin creating meaningful change. I believe that what happened to you is part of your story, but it does not have to define the rest of it. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and focused on helping you move forward in a way that feels meaningful to you. I use Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients process difficult experiences, recognize the strengths they already possess, and develop practical tools for navigating what comes next. Therapy is not about erasing your experiences or pretending they did not happen. It is about creating space to work through what has been holding you back, reconnect with what matters most, and make room for the life you want to live. You have spent a lot of time showing up for others. Therapy can be a place where you get to show up for yourself.
First session
Clients walk out of their first therapy session with a surprisingly rich set of experiences — not just information, but a sense of what working with me will be like - they leave with clarity, connection, and a plan, even if they’re still unsure about everything else in their life.
Strengths
My strengths as a therapist include creating a warm, nonjudgmental space where clients feel safe to be authentic and heard. I value collaboration, empathy, and active listening, while helping clients identify patterns, build on their strengths, and develop practical strategies for change. My goal is to empower clients to gain insight, increase resilience, and make meaningful progress toward their personal goals.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who knows things can't keep going the way they are and is ready to make meaningful changes. They may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck in relationship challenges, or facing a major life transition. They're curious about understanding themselves more deeply and open to exploring patterns that may be holding them back. They value a collaborative, judgment-free space where they can be honest about their struggles and feel truly heard. Together, we work toward greater clarity, confidence, and resilience, and they're willing to put in the effort needed to create lasting change.
