Paul Amato
I'm Paul Amato, an LICSW who works with adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I focus on trauma, depression, anxiety, anger, self-esteem, relationships, and communication. Every person is different, so I shape my approach around you rather than fitting you into a single method. This is your time, and we'll work together to find what helps."
First session
Our first session is a gentle beginning. You'll share as much or as little as you like about what brought you here, ask me anything you want to know about how I work, and we'll talk about what you hope to get from therapy. You'll leave knowing what to expect from me and what our work together might look like. There's no pressure to go into difficult details before you're ready.
Strengths
Life is complex, with many variables, and no single approach fits everyone. So I tailor our work to you. Sometimes what helps most is a safe, caring space where you can speak your truth without judgment. Other times it's practical tools, exercises between sessions, or straightforward guidance. Whatever we need, I offer it with compassion and love.
Ideal clients
If you're looking for a therapist, you're the right client. There's no ideal client, and you don't need to have it all figured out. Whether you're carrying something recent or something from long ago, what helps most is a willingness to try, at a pace that feels safe for you. Together we'll focus on the issues that matter most to you, and we can shift direction as you go.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the foundation of my work. It helps you notice the thoughts and patterns that keep you stuck, understand how they affect your feelings and actions, and practice new ways of responding. Depending on what you need, I also bring in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills for managing intense emotions, mindfulness to help you stay grounded in the present, and supportive talk therapy when what you most need is to be heard. For clients working through trauma, I'm trained in Brainspotting, a gentle, body-based approach that helps you process painful emotions and past experiences at your own pace. We decide together what works best, including the pace, and we can adjust as your needs change.
Brainspotting
Brainspotting therapy is a brain-body-based psychotherapy that utilizes eye positioning to access and process unintegrated trauma and emotional distress.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
Also known as Tapping. An evidence-based mind-body treatment approach. A practice that involves stimulating accupressure points to help regulate emotions, reduce stress and process difficult experiences.
