🌱 First, seeking mental health therapy and resources is a sign of courage and strength, not weakness. So Welcome! My name is Mariah. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker based out of New Jersey, with 8 years of experience in providing trauma therapy to individuals, groups, and families in various clinical settings. I currently work in a correctional facility with young adults, and also the proud founder and owner of Healing With Her LLC. My therapy practice uniquely focuses on treating men’s mental health issues, with emphasis on men's reintegration, trauma, and recovery. I genuinely provide my support and guidance to young men who’s emotional well-being, self-esteem, relationships, and overall mental health have been affected by trauma, addiction, and incarceration, or some form of involvement in the juvenile and criminal justice system. My clinical approach incorporates culturally appropriate interventions, addresses stigma and barriers in mental health, and recognizes systemic inequalities for racially diverse populations. Healing and recovery requires a level of boldness and honesty within yourself, and with that therapy can have a powerful impact. It will allow you to overcome challenges in your life, and can ultimately shift your mindset from self-defeat and self-sabotage, to self-improvement. So, allow me to help you work toward transformation, pursuing your dreams, and becoming a better you.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

You may have expectations of how therapy "should feel", even on the first day. Let me just tell you it's uncomfortable and it's hard. Maybe you never actually thought you'd even be here looking for someone you can actually trust, and it scares you a little bit. But you're doing it. You tried this as a child because someone told you it's what you needed, and you probably did need it, but your primary focus was strength and survival. You will learn that strength and vulnerability can coexist. And you now need vulnerability not to survive but to live. Maybe you are now recognizing your need for safety, or a more authentic experience of masculinity— where you can show up as yourself with your pain, trauma, and imperfections. You may not even know how you feel or how to figure it out. Most of us don't. But your ready for change. I meet you wherever you are. Let's have an open conversation about mental health, and explore what it means to you to share your story, and heal from your experiences.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Most common therapeutic approach I utilize with my clients to challenge all the negative thoughts that likely undermines their personal or relationship goals and values, or just overall well-being. What do we think leads to the overwhelming anxiety, depression, stress, and self-sabotage. CBT helps me to help you identify and express your emotions in a much less restricted manner. I use this approach as an effective part of treatment for a wide range of Mental Health Disorders, including Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and Personality Disorders, helping my clients manage their symptoms, improve mood stability, and develop positive & healthy coping strategies.

Trauma-Focused CBT

This allows me to dig a little or a LOT deeper. We start with your story, bit by bit, slow and steady. I help my clients to become the narrator, take back their control, and face their trauma head-on. Trauma-focused CBT helps me help you uncover why your triggers hit so hard. It's not just talk therapy- it's building up your strength. I use this specialized form of CBT, as an effective part of treatment for a wide range of traumatic issues and mental health disorders, including history of abuse, foster care/adoption, grief/loss, incarceration, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Substance abuse, and Personality Disorders. It focuses on building resilience, coping skills, and emotional regulation by addressing the trauma at it's core. I enjoy engaging family, partners, and loved ones in this process for support in my clients' healing.

Motivational Interviewing

You say you want to make change but you feel stuck? Let's talk it out. Free of judgement. What's holding you back? It's likely just that change or recovery is an extremely hard process and maybe you can't do it alone. Maybe you feel powerless and need some motivation to change? Maybe your trying desperately not go back down the same path but you see no other way out. I support my clients in developing goals and new healthy and long-term strategies, to navigate and overcome challenges that can be exacerbated by trauma, resistance, hopelessness, or lack of support. This approach is all about your commitment to personal growth and transformation and helping you to feel empowered to make positive life choices.

Faith based therapy

This is a powerful way I help my clients who value spirituality and faith as part of their healing process. If your interested in integrating faith into your therapy and healing process, let's do it. I use a faith-based therapy approach that align with my clients values, to help them develop spiritual coping strategies, and explore how their faith can provide a sense of hope, purpose, and meaning in their life. I work with clients from religious backgrounds including Christianity and Islam. Maybe you need support in a more holistic way. So, let's focus on integrating your spiritual beliefs with mental health strategies, for a much deeper healing and to gain the personal & spiritual growth you might be looking for.

Structural Family Therapy

I've received 5 years of specialized training in Structural Family Therapy, learning and helping families make positive and lasting change, by restructuring their interactions and improving their relationships and family dynamics, in a powerful way. If you have strained or broken relationships with family and loved ones, therapy can help with rebuilding trust, reconnecting, and having those difficult conversations that are easier to avoid. I am uniquely equipped to offer SFT as a specialized service to adolescents and their families. I want to point out, I work with the entire family, rather than focusing on one individual and one problem. Everyone is involved. So, if your a family dealing with high conflict, challenging behaviors, disengagement, the negative effects of incarceration, or issues with parental roles and boundaries, this treatment approach is the one.
