Hi. I'm Mary, a Licensed Professional Counselor working with growtherapy! I am a therapist working in Private Practice and contract with growtherapy and others, to see clients throughout Wisconsin most of the week. I've been doing this for quite some time now, maybe 25 or so years. My husband and I have a 3 year old grandson that keeps us running! We get to take care of him two days a week. I really enjoy working with those who primarily have situational and emotional difficulties with anxiety, stress, ego-strength and unresolved relationship or family issues. Anxiety is so prevalent in our society now, it's epidemic. Relationships are nearly vital for our survival. I say nearly, as many of us suffer here so much, as well. Conflict in relationships, families, friendships, can sometimes be brutal. We all have known people that let us down; people will abandon us; people sometimes die on us; the ideal is that we all have a trusted therapist, at one time or another that we can work things out with. When you feel you're ready, I'd like to help.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Our first session will include getting a background of your family, your medical and situational history, which may take the entire session and sometimes part of the second session. This is important, as information is key to helping. Trust is just as important, and ideally, we will gain some of this too, as we get to know one another in our first few sessions. Meetings with me are very casual, (no stuffiness here)! This is the one place you should feel at peace to not worry, be yourself and come as you are. Subsequent sessions will focus more on the situational or emotional conflict that has promoted you to seek counseling and setting primary goals to enhance this focus. This will include discussing where you would like to see yourself in progression in a month, 3 months or 6 months, etc. This will show movement in our sessions.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I like to treat each person as the unique person that they are, and meet them right where they are. I feel that this is the most effective way to be as a person and as a therapist. I generally utilize CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for most situations, as this methodology is applicable for many instances. I also use Person-centered Therapy, Grief Therapy and Supportive Therapy when applicable to each individual session.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I enjoy working with clients whose concerns involve struggles with anxiety, moderate to poor ego-strength, and sometimes unresolved grief, or relationship issues with others. I have been working with individuals with anxiety for a span of 25 years and as prevalent as it has been, anxiety has become most pronounced within the past several years. With changes in our societal norms, political climate, family imbalance, moral questions; there's little wonder why but more, how do we deal with anxious thoughts? I also work with those who have unresolved issues with others in relationships, whether with family, partners or loved ones that have passed on. We were meant to be in relationship with others, which makes it particularly difficult when we aren't or can't be. The reward in working with these particular populations, as well as others like them, come with seeing each individual's unique capacity for growth; the challenge is helping the client see this in themselves.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT or Cognitive Behavior Therapy is an evidenced-based concept that helps us to first recognize unhealthy beliefs or distortions we often have, such as "all-or-nothing thinking" or "overgeneralization". Once identified, we can challenge negative patterns of behavior and thinking in order to better regulate emotional and situational difficulties.
