Mackenzie McNabb
I’m glad you’re here! I enjoy working with adults navigating issues such as depression, anxiety, life changes, relationship challenges, and work stress. I like to work with people who want to learn about how our past impacts our present and develop ways to become resilient in the here and now. In our work together, we’ll develop a supportive, encouraging space. We’ll begin to uncover the thoughts, emotions, and patterns that have shaped you. Just like building muscle takes practice, we’ll work on ways you can practice your goals. I blend a mix of straightforward feedback and warm, encouraging curiosity where we can dive deeper. Acceptance and understanding are the clearest way toward feeling whole.
First session
In our first session we’ll focus on getting to know you. I’m sure you have tried a lot of ways to feel better. I want to hear about what has worked and what hasn’t worked so that I can best help. I want to get to know you aside from just one diagnosis, so we will begin by exploring your skills, interests, and the context that surrounds you. We’ll talk about what led you to therapy, but also about who you are as a person. We’ll work together to come up with a path toward achieving what you were hoping to get from therapy. First, we’ll figure out what brought you to therapy. Then we will create a plan as you put your goals into words. We’ll go at your own pace to figure out what patterns and habits have been getting in the way of your well-being. This way, we’ll create change through compassion.
Strengths
I combine insight with hands-on ideas for positive change. I love open communication; this space is designed for you to share anything on your mind! I provide empathic listening and also like to ask questions for you to discover what might be beneath the surface. I’ve always loved working with people, for as long as I remember. Along my path, I’ve worked with children, adults, elder adults, chronic illness, crisis work, became a medical social worker, and then became a clinician who provided therapy for adults dealing with anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges. I like to create a light-hearted environment as well, because sometimes you just need to laugh.
Ideal clients
I prefer to work with adults. I have especially enjoyed working with 18 to 25 year olds, as this is typically a time of much transition for people. I have helped people with anxiety, depression, sleep issues, work stress and relationship issues with positive results. Ideally, I work with those who can commit to weekly 55 minute sessions and actively engage in each session. I love working with anyone who is motivated to grow and who wants to feel unstuck from the patterns that are no longer serving them.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
We will work together to learn how to notice your emotions, identify your thoughts and feelings, and then work toward managing these emotions without running from them. Accepting and becoming resilient to tough emotions is the goal, not getting rid of emotions all together (we're human after all)!
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
We will work together to uncover where your thoughts and feelings "come from." By going into the past, you can develop an understanding of yourself, which can help you develop grace and compassion for yourself, instead of judgment. Once we develop this understanding, it makes it much easier to navigate the relationships in our life and understand others as well.
