Tegan Snigier
Hello, I'm Tegan! I’m a clinical psychologist living in Virginia with my husband, three children, and two labradors. Thanks for checking out my profile. Below you'll find a bit about my work experience and how it shapes what I do in sessions: Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including community mental health centers, schools, Probate and Family Court, and private practice. Working in these different environments has helped me understand the bigger picture of how family, school, and other systems can affect a person’s well-being.
From my prior training/employment, I have a lot of experience with psychological testing and working with schools and jobs to help clients obtain accommodations.
I enjoy working with people of all ages, but I have a particular interest in working with infants and young children. Being a parent myself has given me a deeper understanding of the challenges and joys that come with raising children, and it helps me connect with both kids and their parents. I also have experience conducting psychological evaluations, which has given me a strong understanding of the testing process, learning disabilities, and the Special Education system. My experience conducting Autism evaluations has also helped me better understand and support neurodivergent individuals and appreciate the different ways people experience the world. Most importantly, I try to meet each person where they are and understand them in the context of their family, relationships, and everyday life.
First session
I respect and appreciate your choice to come to therapy. The first step is often the hardest. Your first session is a "get to know you" session that works in both directions. I will ask some questions to learn about you, and I am happy to answer any questions that you may have about me. We will go over important policies and procedures and expectations for the both of us. Then we will talk a bit about what brought you to therapy and your goals for treatment. Finally, we will discuss a plan for when and how often to meet.
Strengths
In general, I pride myself on my ability to connect with a variety of clients. I make it a point to take time to get to know you and understand your point of view. My approach is non-judgmental and supportive. And I've been told I have a great sense of humor. My philosophy toward therapy is that I am not here to tell you what to do or not to do. I simply help you explore and think about different approaches to a situation and then let you decide.
Ideal clients
I love working with any client who is motivated to consistently show up and learn more about themselves in order to work toward their vision of a good life. This can be on an individual basis or in the context of their relationship or their family. I have extensive experience treating anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, Autism, and adjustment to various life changes.
Treatment methods
Integrative
I use an integrative approach, meaning that I use many different styles of therapy in a meaningful way, depending on what best fits the situation and your personal preference. No matter what type of therapy I'm using, I aim to be supportive of your experience, and I'll ask you questions to help me better understand your perspective. My work is also trauma-informed, strengths-based, neurodivergent-affirming, and practical (in terms of figuring out if there are any community resources you might benefit from). The styles of therapy I use most often are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and motivational interviewing. CBT focuses on a person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and it can sometimes involve doing concrete action steps outside of the session as a way to practice a skill or experiment with a new way of doing things. ACT helps us accept things as they are currently (even if we don't like them), but also helps us figure out how we would like to change them. Motivational interviewing helps us figure out what our goals are, what we need to do to achieve them, and what things might be getting in the way of achieving them. I also have experience doing couples and family therapy, as well as performing evaluations for learning differences.
