Hello, I am a retired educator who served for 30 years, with over 17 years as a school counselor, working with families and individual students from 4 years of age to 18 years old. I worked with students setting goals, problem solving, as well as, working to manage anger and grief. I also assisted many parents in finding more effective tools in behavior management systems at home and was able to help parents and adolescents find better tools to communicate with each other throughout my career as a school counselor. As retirement drew near, I received my LPC and went into the private sector and began working mainly with individuals who experienced trauma, through a non-profit organization. I have a passion working with individuals and families and assisting them in finding their way through difficult situations in life. I especially love assisting parents with difficulties with children in the school setting and then later assisting trauma victims in regaining their power and strength through some of the darkest days. I understand what it is like to grieve and hurt when people you trust the most in the world, break your trust and finding your way out of that dark tunnel is difficult, but possible. My goal as a therapist is always to assist my clients in becoming a stronger individual and knowing that they are always stronger and better because of and In-spite of what they have been through, because they are Survivors!

My initial training as a therapist was in premarital and marriage counseling, a vital part of my practice that I continue to enjoy to this day. I have approximately 20 years of experience and am licensed as a counselor and supervisor of interns. In addition to counseling couples and trauma survivors, I also work with persons coming out of the sex industry. I have experience working with major depressive disorders, bipolar I & II, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, and personality disorders. I am well-versed and extremely comfortable working with people of different cultures. I utilize a trauma-informed, person-centered, psychodynamic approach in therapy and often incorporate CBT, DBT and mindfulness techniques. I am a certified revisioning practitioner, a technique that simulates re-attachment for grief resolution and ego-integration. My certification through the FBI National Academy in resiliency allows me to train local police departments throughout the Metroplex in critical incident and mental health orientation trainings. I truly consider it an honor and a privilege to partner with you in your journey towards wholeness. No one should live a life full of shame, rejection, regret, or guilt. I strive to provide a safe and nurturing environment where you can explore and live your life in the renewed freedoms you are intended to have, with fullness and in joy. There is a plan and a purpose for your life, full of unique strengths and talents. My goal is to help you become all that you were created to be. I help individuals, couples, and families learn to love and relate to one another in a more healthy and secure way based on a deeper understanding of each other’s experience and application of new skills. My clients seek me out when they've been experiencing relational distress and are unable to improve it on their own. You might consider me if you've tolerated your situation for years and the thought of continuing is so painful that you're on the brink of ending or cutting off the relationship unless things change. Prior to private practice, I provided trauma-informed care at nonprofit organizations helping unhoused persons recover from substance abuse and learn life transformation skills; and supervising court ordered visitation between children and their non-custodial parents. I hold an MA in Professional Counseling from Texas State University.

Hey there! I'm Karen Lanxon, a Licensed Professional Counselor and I help Texas working moms find balance, restore purpose, and thrive without the stronghold of guilt and burnout. I’m a working mom of three amazing kids (two young adult boys and a preteen girl. Yikes!) and married to my high school sweetheart. If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m a huge people person who loves the Lord, journaling, dancing, serving at my church, and finding every opportunity to laugh. My life is full, busy, and blessed—but I’d be lying if I said I’ve never felt overwhelmed, burnt out, or like I’ve lost a little bit of me in the shuffle. Through the under standing that it’s ok to have Jesus & therapy, plus the gentle, loving nudges from my husband (like, "Karen, you’re doing too much"), I’ve learned the power of saying no, prioritizing rest, and making space for the things that bring me joy: a quiet moment with my journal, a dance break in the kitchen, or laughing until my sides hurt, I’ve discovered that balance isn’t about perfection—it’s about grace. Through my personal journey and over 20 years working with families through the foster care system, education, and my church community, I felt called to counseling—especially to help fellow moms. As a Christian, wife, and working mom, I GET IT! I know firsthand the challenges of balancing work, family, and faith while trying not to lose yourself in the process. There’s nothing more fulfilling to me than helping women grow as parents, as individuals, and in their faith. Together, we can embrace imperfection and discover the beauty of thriving in every season of life. Book a FREE 15 min consult to see if we are a good fit!

First and foremost, I am a Christian. While my faith in God is very strong, I work within the parameters established by my clients. If they do not believe, and do not request faith-based services, this will never come up in our work together, but I hope to treat you with all the compassion that Jesus would. That was the greatest compliment I ever had from a Lesbian client, that for the first time in her life, she felt treated as Jesus would have treated her. I am a trauma survivor myself. I know the difficult road back from childhood and adult traumatic events first-hand, not just from the textbooks. I dedicated my life and 35-year career running a nonprofit serving survivors of trauma--child abuse victims, veterans, domestic violence, sexual trauma, surviving family members of homicide victims, and terroristic attacks. It is unconscionable what human beings will do to one another, and it can perpetuate for generations if you neglect your own recovery. I am also a mediator and have had the honor of reconciling many marriages--some who even came to me for divorce and custody originally, wanting to save their marriage but not knowing what else to try. I've seen healing in many generational disputes, and in interventions with families trying to get an addicted or severely mentally ill member to treatment. I do Workplace Mediation and Eldercare and Guardianship Mediation as well. Have differences in parenting? Parenting and Discipline Planning are accomplished expeditiously in mediation. Want the perfect wedding gift? Give them Pre-marital or Re-marital Mediation so they can discuss and agree on life choices together before they get married and start arguing endlessly about them.

Since becoming a counselor, I have worked in a variety of community counseling settings. I have worked with clients from ages 3 through 80 and with individuals, couples, and families. With that breadth of experience, very little shocks or surprises me and I have gotten a pretty good sense of where the types of counseling that play to my strengths as a counselor overlap with the types of counseling that are helpful for my clients. This sense (along with learning about lots and lots of research into what helps people find and maintain mental health) has led to the following guiding principles that shape all the counseling I do: 1) The client is always in charge. I know a lot of things but you will always be the one who decides what you want to get out of counseling, how we work towards that goal, whether or not what we’re doing seems to be working, and when we’re done. 2) Change and health happen through relationships. No matter what you come in for, there are always relational implications of change and relational factors that contribute to whatever it is that you came to counseling to change. 3) Counseling should be efficient. Counseling has significant costs in time and money. I think the benefits far outweigh the costs but if I can give you the benefits while helping you save on the costs then I want to do that.

I love listening to my client's stories and helping them put the pieces together. At times we may mix conversation with psychoeducation in coping skills, mindfulness, and meditation. Bravely sharing your story in counseling allows you a rare opportunity to be heard without judgment. This is a priceless opportunity to process your experience. Together we can develop the coping skills necessary to diminish the impact of mental health conditions such as anxiety, trauma, or depression while giving you the ability to adapt more readily to life's curveballs. Whatever you are facing, I am here to help. Seeking therapy is a brave new start, and I will be here to help you enhance your life one step at a time.

Hello, my name is Teresa, practicing mental health for over 16 years working with the military population. Working as a middle school teacher in a lower socioeconomic area. This led to my desire to go back to school for my master’s degree in counseling psychology. Receiving my LPC licensure, led me to pursue my chemical dependency counselor license (LCDC). I began working as a substance abuse counselor with the US Army in substance abuse counseling. While working with the military I worked at a local hospital developing a program for civilians in chemical dependency. The need to work with individuals, and families including Service Members, led me to work as a contractor for private corporations. During this time, I received a certification in behavioral therapy to work with the autism spectrum population. Raised as a military dependent, then wife and mother, I experienced many aspects of different personalities. I was led to understand what it means to try to hide who you are to eventually become someone you may not recognize. The goal is to have you see, life is wonderful, we go through the storm to appreciate the sunshine. The experience developed led me to work with addiction, anxiety, PTSD, and many other mental health issues. We are a beautiful bouquet with different views on life. Using an eclectic therapeutic array of mental health care has allotted me to develop individual care. This concept of care is the same for couples and group therapy. Some techniques include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and psychosocial therapeutic techniques.

Hello and welcome to my practice! If you choose to engage in therapy with me, you can expect a professional experience as well as a well-trained provider. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Nationally Certified Counselor, and a Board-Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor with over 20 years of addiction training and counseling experience. I have additional training/specialization in grief and trauma issues, (Certified Clinical Trauma Professional). Whether you are coping with anxiety and depression related to normal life stressors, or if you struggle with addiction issues and/or impulsive behaviors, we can identify what may be at the root of these behaviors and develop strategies to manage stress in a healthier manner. As a college professor with over 15 years of teaching experience in psychology, criminal justice, grief and loss, and addiction courses, my counseling includes evidence-based approaches to increasing coping skills and reducing common symptoms such as anxiety and depression. My preferred approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, with a strong emphasis on Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. This is a focus on the present rather than the psychodynamic approach, which reviews (sometimes endlessly) the past. I am a Certified Mindfulness-Informed Clinician and my clients report less anxiety after learning these skills. I believe in establishing a confidential therapeutic relationship to build the trust necessary for sharing intimate thoughts and emotions that promote growth, healing, and self-awareness. If this sounds like a good fit for you, please contact me to schedule an initial evaluation, to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. I look forward to assisting you in your decision to make a positive change in your life! Visit my website: https://sharongough13.wixsite.com/website.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Texas rather than a city like Dallas?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Texas from Houston to Austin! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Texas.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
