Hi! My name’s Kelly. I am a Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) practicing in Michigan. I completed my Bachelor of Arts in communication sciences and disorders at Michigan State University (MSU) in 2012. After graduation, I worked in a variety of mental health settings for 4 years before going to graduate school at Michigan State University (MSU) again for social work in 2014. Upon graduation in 2016, I acquired an outpatient position working with adults in a rural setting. My clients’ needs expanded well-beyond my job description and scope of practice. I found myself enjoying the problem-solving, networking, and advocacy that was required of me. I was humbled by my clients. They are my greatest teachers. I enjoy diverse experiences. Although I am trained as a clinical social worker, I work to see the whole forest; not just my tree. Social justice, advocacy, and public health are just a few causes that are important to me.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

It’s hard to talk to a total stranger about the vulnerable details of your life! So for the first session, I like to keep it light and casual. Bring something to drink (I always have coffee or water), and we’ll talk about how your week has been.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I have worked retail, customer service, home health care, respite care, research assistant, and a variety of volunteer positions before becoming an outpatient therapist 8 years ago. My broad range of experiences and connections has allowed me to empathize with almost anyone I meet.

My treatment methods

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I have 7 years of experience working with individuals and groups to learn the skills of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). I personally practice many of the 33 skills on a daily basis, and believe that they can apply to any client no matter the situation. Topics include: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance (managing a crisis), Emotion Regulation (changing an emotion), and Interpersonal Effectiveness (how to work with other people). At Grow Therapy, I'll be utilizing skills in a more casual DBT-informed approach. To practice the full program, the therapist and client commit to a year of one-on-one sessions, and group therapy each week. I am honored that 7 of my clients have graduated.
