I am a licensed mental health counselor and owner of True North Therapies in Stuart, FL. I specialize in offering compassionate and professional mental health counseling services specifically tailored for children and teens, providing the help and support they need to navigate life's challenges. I also has extensive experience helping adults and families with a variety of emotional and mental health concerns. I endeavor to meet each client where he or she is on their path, listening intently to their stories and striving to empower them to face life’s challenges in healthy ways.
My intake sessions generally run a bit longer than a typical counseling session (I usually budget about 1.5 hours). In these sessions, I try to gather as much information about you and what brings you to therapy, while acclimating you to the counseling process, addressing any questions or concerns you have and helping you to feel at ease. I do request that should you decide to reach out to me for services, that you book an initial 15 minute "consult" first so that we have the opportunity to speak for a bit to determine if we are a good therapeutic fit.
I am genuine, warm and easy-going and bring a lot of real-world experience to therapy. I truly love helping others and I think you'll find that it shows.
The vast majority of my clients benefit from interventions rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy. CBT is based upon a framework that recognizes the interrelationship of thoughts, feelings and behaviors. The therapy model seeks to increase clients' self-awareness of each and to challenge unhelpful and distorted thoughts and self-talk that may contribute to unhealthy behaviors and feelings of distress. I have had great success treating clients with this goal-oriented approach.
My practice, True North Therapies, offers Social Learning Groups for children and teens with high functioning autism and other related disabilities. Having worked with hundreds of children, teens and adults on the autism spectrum over the past 15 years, I am keenly aware that “one size fits all” skills groups simply don’t work well. I give great care and consideration to each group’s composition to ensure, as much as possible, that each child stands to benefit from the same level and scope of instruction. Each group’s design is thematic, focusing on only a few related core concepts at a time and strategically attending to others as they arise. A sound understanding of these concepts serve as the foundation for higher levels of social cognitive skill development. It is not un-common for participants to enroll in two or more “semesters," which are typically offered coincident with the Fall and Spring school schedules.
