My name is Tim Johnston and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor based in Texas. I own my solo practice, Waves of Grace Counseling. I received my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University. I worked years in a community mental health setting and now private practice. My specialties are anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, mens issues, and addiction. I provide different research based strategies which include cognitive behavioral therapies, psychodynamic, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Christian counseling is also offered. These are the different 'roadmaps' that will help us get you to a place of healing, freedom, and peace of mind.
In our first session together, we will start with introductions to get to know each other and then begin to explore the specific challenges you are experiencing and what you want to accomplish through your counseling journey. From here, I will begin to create a treatment plan that is specific to your strengths, needs, and wants.
I am empathetic, compassionate, and understanding. I have a genuine and authentic interest in others, ability to actively listen, and non-judgmental.
I enjoy helping men make progress with their persistent anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress, and other related struggles. As men, we are expected to do and carry a lot of weight that can feel unbearable at times. The focus for me is to help men find freedom from the darkness they are experiencing, challenge the unhealthy societal expectations put on them, and embracing who they have been called to become in this life.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a common psychotherapy used to treat different challenges including anxiety, depression, ptsd, trauma, and addiction. The basis of this therapeutic approach is learning to recognize and challenge distorted ways of thinking and learning different self help strategies to alleviate symptoms and create healthy behaviors in your daily life.
Christian based therapy is an integration of biblical scripture, teachings, and prayer while also using clinical interventions to provide a dual approach of healing and hope.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy to help individuals connect unconscious influences of past experiences, specifically in childhood, leading to present day issues and using this as a roadmap to healing and a path forward.
EMDR is another research based treatment that has shown to be highly effective in the treatment and healing of PTSD symptoms. This approach is used to alleviate distress from disturbing memories through the use of bilateral stimulation.
