My name is Alissa Madsen and I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I have a Master of Social Work from Texas State University. Having lived in Central Texas for 11 years, I’m proud to call it my home. Social work is my second career, but the skills of patience and determination I learned prior to making this transition have been invaluable. In my past life as a classical musician, I was a perfectionist and struggled with imposter syndrome. Further, as a single parent for more than a decade, I know what it's like to feel isolated and alone. I believe that these experiences have helped me to become more empathetic and understanding. I'm passionate about mental health and want to help you live your happiest, most fulfilled life.
Therapy is a deeply personal relationship and requires a great deal of trust. During the initial session, we will go over your intake paperwork and I will ask you questions about your history and the concerns you have. We will take it slowly, and not dive in too deeply at first, as I believe that building a strong therapeutic relationship takes time and trust. We will make a plan, together, for how to move forward to improve your quality of life and mental health.
As a member of the queer community and a former member of a high-demand religion, I have lived experiences that help me to be empathic, patient and a good listener. In the past, I have had really negative experiences with mental health treatment, prompting me to become a therapist myself. I want my clients to have positive experiences in therapy. I'm passionate about providing quality mental health services and am committed to working hard alongside my clients.
I approach my therapeutic relationships from a trauma-informed and person-centered lens, meaning that you are the expert on your life. When getting to know new clients, I come with an attitude of curiosity, genuineness, empathy and unconditional positive regard.
