Hi! My name is McKinsey Kemp and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Florida. I received my Masters Degree from California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB). I have been practicing for 6 years (1 year case management). I work with children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced some form of trauma. I help my clients develop the skills that they need to process what they have experienced, so they may heal and find peace.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session, it will be about getting to know each other and understanding the “why now” that brought you here. We will explore your goals and develop a roadmap based on what you feel you need to achieve them.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Over my years of practicing I have come to understand the value in a trusting therapeutic relationship and know that this starts by listening to my client. In my practice I utilize client centered treatment. I acknowledge the importance of voice and choice in treatment. Therefore, my clients are the captain, I am just helping them to build the ship (skills) needed to reach their destination.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I have five years of experience using CBT with children, adolescents, and adults. I have found that developing skills to increase awareness of thinking errors or negative thinking can help individuals see situations more clearly. With practice, these skills can lead to better decision making in difficult situations and changes in behavior. I have used this method of treatment when working with clients who have struggled with symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use disorders.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I am DBT trained and I am currently working on becoming certified in this form of treatment. I have over three years of experience using DBT techniques when working with adolescents and adults. I have utilized this form of treatment when working with individuals who are struggling with symptoms of PTSD, Depression, self harm, and borderline personality traits. In my practice I have found that this form of treatment helps to address emotion dysregulation and teaches skills to help individuals manage strong emotions.

Grief Therapy

I have five years of experience providing grief therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. In my practice, when working with clients who are experiencing grief, I use Dr. Lois Tonkin’s theory of “Growing Around Grief”. I acknowledge that the grief of losing someone close to us never really leaves. Instead our lives continue to expand verses our grief getting smaller. When working people who are experiencing grief I find it beneficial to acknowledge the loss, including ambiguous loss, as part of the healing process. I also work with clients to develop a plan for healing and for finding peace.

Motivational Interviewing

I have five years of experience using Motivational Interviewing when working with adolescents and adults. I often use this treatment method when working with clients with a co-occurring diagnosis of substance use disorder. I like this form of treatment as it is embodies meeting the client where they’re at. This is accomplished through identifying an individual’s stage of change and their motivation for change.

Trauma-Focused CBT

I am certified in TF-CBT. I have over three years of experience providing this form of therapy to children and adolescents. I have provided this form of treatment virtually and in person. I have found that this form of treatment is client-centered in the length of treatment and method of completing the trauma narrative. This is a collaborative form of treatment and I encourage the involvement of a trusted adult for conjoined sessions when possible. In my practice, I have found, when appropriate, this is a helpful form of healing for those who have experienced trauma.
