My name is Shirley Taybron. I have been a counselor in public schools (all levels), colleges, military communities, and now in private practice. I am enjoying the personal work with clients in private practice, and the relationship building between therapist and client in making life changes. I work with my clients where they are in beginning the journey of making changes and reaching goals. Assessments, and individual treatment plans that are agreed on with me and my client are the foundation of our sessions. I only ask for honesty and commitment to the therapy process.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session we go over a brief summary of my background and yours. I will be most interested in what made you decide you needed to talk to a therapist and what you would like to change about that situation. All questions asked will be done to help us make a plan for working together on your "change goals".

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I have a great deal of experience working with adolescents and women of all ages. As a military spouse for many years I have had the opportunity to move and work in several states, and one foreign country. It also gave me the opportunity to work with several ethnic groups, and persons of different sexual orientations, as well as military and civilian.

My treatment methods

Reality Therapy

In my practice I use Reality Therapy because it is important in order to change behavior that one can identify the behavior they feel needs changing. In therapy focusing on Current behavior I guide individuals to see themselves accurately, to see reality, and enable to fulfill their needs without harming themselves or others. I find this treatment method is useful with teens and young adults who are in short term therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

In my practice I use CBT in many ways. It can be used with short term therapy as well as more lengthy treatment. I use CBT to treat anxiety and depression focusing on the clients' irrational thoughts and how they affect their behavior. There can be good success with this treatment with all age groups.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

Use of this treatment method is helpful often when clients are having crisis situations, or situations that required talking through situations requiring somwhst immediate solutions. I have seen it be beneficial with teens, and some family situations.

Grief Therapy

I use Grief Therapy in my practice to help people who have experienced a fairly recent loss of a loved one or very close friend regardless of the circumstances of the loss. Clientsn are guided this process to lessen the anxiety and depression that usually accompanies grief for the length of time they feel they need assistance. Compassionate release techniques are used.

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

In my practice I work with all races and cultures. Being sensitive to each person's culture and its affect on their mental health is very important. In exploring their background at the intake session it gives me some information to start using in the awareness of their culture and what to do to help them understand it's importance.
