Kristin McMahon
Hi everyone! My name is Kristin (she/her)! As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I love what I do! This includes working with clients to reach their goals, reinforce their strengths and work towards inner healing.
I have experience working with individuals, couples, and families who may be experiencing anxiety, depression, addiction, relational issues or trauma symptoms.
I strive to utilize reflective listening, empathetic understanding and compassion with my clients to provide a safe enough environment where they can feel comfortable sharing with me in our therapy sessions. I encompass modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, but work towards an individualized treatment approach as each client is different! My background includes working in outpatient, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and correctional settings with clients who may identify with different multicultural backgrounds. I have experience working with individuals, couples, and families who may be experiencing anxiety, depression, addiction, relational issues or trauma symptoms. If you or your chosen family are ready to begin therapy, I am here to be a support and guide for you to work towards your growth!
First session
In our first session, you can expect us to build rapport with one another. I would like to get to know you and your experiences (of course whatever you feel safe and comfortable sharing). We will also create a plan for what you would like to work on together during your time at Grow!
Strengths
Having over 7 years of experience, I feel confident in providing a safe space for my clients, providing active listening and helping you to build connections between your thoughts, feelings and actions as well as ways to work on challenging some of the reasons why you may feel stuck at the moment.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is an adult who may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, disconnected, or weighed down by past experiences. They may be navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, life transitions, or patterns that no longer feel helpful. I work especially well with clients who want to better understand themselves, heal from difficult experiences, and develop practical tools for creating meaningful change. My ideal clients are open to a collaborative therapeutic relationship where they can feel heard, understood, and accepted without judgment. Together, we can work toward feeling more confident, emotionally grounded, and connected to yourself and the life you want to create. I believe therapy should feel like a safe space where you don't have to have everything figured out before you walk through the door.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a practical, collaborative approach that explores the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Together, we can identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck, develop healthier ways of responding to challenges, and build skills that support lasting change. CBT can be especially helpful for anxiety, depression, self-criticism, and navigating difficult life experiences.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a trauma-focused approach that helps the brain process distressing or overwhelming experiences that may still feel “stuck.” EMDR can help reduce the emotional and physical intensity of difficult memories, triggers, and beliefs about yourself that developed from past experiences. Rather than requiring you to talk through every detail of what happened, EMDR focuses on helping you safely process experiences so they feel less overwhelming and have less power over your present.
Cognitive Processing (CPT)
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a trauma-focused approach that helps you explore how difficult experiences may have shaped the way you think about yourself, others, and the world. Together, we work to identify unhelpful beliefs and patterns that may be keeping you stuck, while developing more balanced and compassionate ways of understanding what happened. CPT can be especially helpful for processing trauma, reducing distress, and feeling less controlled by the past.
Brainspotting
Brainspotting is a body- and trauma-informed approach that explores the connection between where we look, what we feel, and the experiences we carry. It can provide a way to gently access and process emotions, memories, and experiences that may be difficult to put into words. Brainspotting can be incorporated into therapy to support deeper emotional processing, increased self-awareness, and a greater sense of calm and connection within yourself.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an approach that helps you develop a different relationship with difficult thoughts and emotions rather than feeling like you have to fight, avoid, or control them. Together, we can explore what matters most to you, build greater flexibility in how you respond to life’s challenges, and take meaningful steps toward the life you want to create. ACT can be especially helpful when anxiety, self-criticism, or difficult emotions begin to interfere with the things that are important to you.
