About me

My name is Tim Johnston and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor based in Texas. I received my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University. I worked years in a community mental health setting and now private practice. My specialties are anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, mens issues, and grief and loss. I provide different research based strategies which include cognitive behavioral therapies, psychodynamic, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Christian counseling is also offered. These are the different 'roadmaps' that will help us get you to a place of healing, freedom, and peace of mind.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session together, we will start with introductions to get to know each other and then begin to explore the specific challenges you are experiencing and what you want to accomplish through your counseling journey. From here, I will begin to create a treatment plan that is specific to your strengths, needs, and wants.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I am empathetic, compassionate, and understanding. I have a genuine and authentic interest in others, ability to actively listen, and non-judgmental.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I enjoy helping my clients make progress with their persistent mental health challenges and discovering what life has to offer when finding true healing. I have worked with a wide range of individuals that have struggled with these mental health challenges that have stemmed from different forms of abuse. I am passionate about helping my clients overcome the significant hurt these experiences cause and learning to see themselves through a new lense full of hope, healing, and transformation.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a common psychotherapy used to treat different challenges including anxiety, depression, ptsd, trauma, and addiction. The basis of this therapeutic approach is learning to recognize and challenge distorted ways of thinking and learning different self help strategies to alleviate symptoms and create healthy behaviors in your daily life.

Christian Counseling

Christian based therapy is an integration of biblical scripture, teachings, and prayer while also using clinical interventions to provide a dual approach of healing and hope.

Psychodynamic

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy to help individuals connect unconscious influences of past experiences, specifically in childhood, leading to present day issues and using this as a roadmap to healing and a path forward.

EMDR

EMDR is another research based treatment that has shown to be highly effective in the treatment and healing of PTSD symptoms. This approach is used to alleviate distress from disturbing memories through the use of bilateral stimulation.

I’ve never had a therapist who I felt like truly listened to me and understood. He also has a way of correlating trauma to learned behaviors from childhood that help me cope and understand. He is the best therapist I’ve ever seen.

Sessions with Tim are structured and focused on my immediate mental health concerns and considerate of how my upbringing and past could be influencing such. I appreciate how he prompts me to reflect on what I learned or got from our time together at the end of each session. I started to notice a positive difference in my coping once I started doing sessions weekly. He's supportive, challenging, and patient with my progress.
