About me

I’m Melissa Lapides, and my work centers around attachment. If you’re dating or in a relationship, we’re going to look at how your early experiences shaped the way you connect, protect, pursue, withdraw, or repeat the same patterns over and over. Together, we make sense of why you’re experiencing the challenges you’re having — not from a place of blame, but from understanding. I work with both individuals and couples to help them build more harmonious relationships rooted in emotional safety, secure connection, and real love and intimacy. When you understand your attachment style and nervous system, your relationship patterns stop feeling confusing and start feeling workable. I’m warm, direct, and grounded — think compassionate but honest. I’ll hold space for your pain, and I’ll also gently call you forward when you’re ready. I believe most struggles make sense in the context of your story and your nervous system, not because something is “wrong” with you. My goal is to help you feel more regulated, more connected, and more empowered in your relationships and your life. Healing doesn’t have to be dramatic — it can be steady, real, and deeply transformative.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In your first session with me, you can expect it to feel structured but relaxed — intentional, but not intimidating. We’ll start by talking about what’s bringing you in right now. If you’re coming as a couple, I’ll want to hear from both of you about what’s been happening and what you each hope will change. If you’re coming individually, we’ll explore your current relationship patterns, dating experiences, or emotional struggles and begin connecting them to your attachment history. I’ll ask thoughtful questions about your early relationships and important life experiences — not to dig for drama, but to understand the blueprint you’re operating from. We may begin identifying your attachment style and noticing how your nervous system responds in conflict, intimacy, or distance. My goal isn’t to overwhelm you with information; it’s to help you feel seen, understood, and clearer about what’s actually happening beneath the surface. You won’t be judged. You won’t be blamed. And you won’t just vent without direction. You’ll leave with insight, language for your patterns, and a sense of where we’re headed. Most clients tell me they feel relieved after the first session — like things finally make sense.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

What stands out about my therapeutic approach is that we go straight to the root of your relationship patterns through the lens of attachment and nervous system regulation. Instead of just talking about surface-level issues, we explore how your early experiences shaped the way you connect, protect, pursue, or withdraw in love. I integrate insight with experiential work, meaning we don’t just understand your triggers intellectually — we slow down and work with them in real time so change becomes embodied, not just talked about. Clients often say they finally feel understood and that their dynamics start to make sense instead of feeling chaotic or shameful. The result is less reactivity, more emotional safety, stronger self-trust, and relationships that feel secure, intimate, and aligned rather than repetitive and confusing.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I’m best positioned to serve individuals and couples who are ready to look honestly at their relationship patterns and take responsibility for their growth. My clients are often high-functioning, self-aware, and motivated — yet they find themselves stuck in anxious-avoidant dynamics, repeating the same fights, attracting emotionally unavailable partners, or feeling disconnected in long-term relationships. They may struggle with overthinking, people-pleasing, emotional shutdown, jealousy, or fear of abandonment, and they want to understand why it keeps happening. I work especially well with people who value depth and are open to exploring how early attachment experiences shaped their current challenges. If your goal is more than symptom relief — if you want secure attachment, emotional safety, real intimacy, and healthier communication — we’ll be a strong fit. My approach is ideal for those who are willing to slow down, build awareness of their nervous system, and practice new ways of relating so that change lasts beyond the therapy room.

My treatment methods

Couples Counseling

Couples therapy is one of my areas of expertise and a part of my work that I truly love. My approach is deeply rooted in attachment theory and draws from principles of the Gottman Method. I help couples explore how early childhood experiences and attachment relationships can shape the way they respond to closeness, conflict, vulnerability, and emotional needs in their adult relationships. Much of our work focuses on identifying and interrupting the repeating cycles that keep couples stuck. Rather than focusing on who is right or wrong, we look beneath the conflict to understand the deeper needs, fears, and protective responses driving it. I have had great success helping couples recognize these patterns, regulate during conflict, communicate their needs more effectively, and create healthier ways of responding to one another. My style is warm, compassionate, and direct. I help both partners feel heard while also encouraging each person to take responsibility for the patterns they bring into the relationship. My goal is to help couples create lasting change, deepen emotional and physical intimacy, rebuild trust, and develop a relationship that feels safer, more connected, and more secure. Please note: Couples sessions are $250 per session.

Attachment-based

Attachment work is at the heart of what I do. I help clients understand how early childhood experiences, family dynamics, and intergenerational patterns shape the way they love, attach, and respond in relationships today. Many of us learned very early to pursue love, protect ourselves from it, ignore our own needs, or disconnect from ourselves in order to maintain connection with others. Together, we uncover where those patterns began, heal the early wounds underneath them, and interrupt cycles that may have been passed down for generations. A central message in my work is that secure attachment isn’t only about finding the “right” partner—it’s also about learning how to stay securely connected to yourself while you are connected to someone else. I help clients recognize when old attachment wounds are being activated, regulate rather than react, trust their emotions and needs, set healthy boundaries, and make relationship choices from a more grounded and secure place. This work can be especially powerful whether you are dating and want to choose healthier partners, struggling with recurring patterns in a current relationship, or simply wanting to understand why relationships affect you the way they do. The goal is not just to understand your attachment history, but to stop repeating it—so you can create relationships that feel more secure, connected, and emotionally healthy.

Somatic

believe healing doesn’t happen through insight alone—our bodies often hold onto experiences long after our minds understand them. Early attachment wounds, chronic stress, and difficult relationships can shape the nervous system, leaving us more likely to become anxious, overwhelmed, shut down, or reactive when something in the present touches an old wound. I use a mind-body approach to help clients slow down and recognize what is happening inside them before automatically reacting. We pay attention to emotions, physical sensations, triggers, and nervous-system responses, while building practical tools for grounding, self-soothing, and emotional regulation. One of the principles I often emphasize is regulate before you relate—learning to come back to yourself first so you can respond to others from the present rather than from an old place of fear or protection. This work is especially helpful for people who understand their patterns intellectually but still find themselves repeating them. My goal is to help you develop a greater sense of safety within yourself, stay connected to yourself during difficult moments, and create new emotional and relational responses that feel more secure and intentional.

Gottman method

I use a Gottman-informed approach in my work with couples, incorporating concepts and interventions from the Gottman Method to help partners strengthen friendship, improve communication, manage conflict, and deepen emotional connection. While I am not formally certified in the Gottman Method, I draw from its research-based principles and practical tools alongside attachment-focused and emotionally focused approaches, tailoring treatment to each couple’s unique needs.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

I incorporate principles of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help individuals and couples better understand the emotions and attachment needs underlying their relationship patterns. I help clients identify recurring cycles of conflict or disconnection, move beneath reactive emotions such as anger, defensiveness, or withdrawal, and access the more vulnerable feelings and needs underneath. Through this process, clients can develop greater emotional awareness, communicate their needs more effectively, and create safer, more secure and connected relationships.

Introductory session today and I am beyond excited to begin working with Melissa. I have used other therapists in the past year but Melissa has expertise precisely in the areas I am looking to heal. She is warm, authentic, and empathic but I can already sense firm in her approach (which I appreciate). Stay tuned for more updates!
