My main focus in therapy is to support clients not just manage but understand their symptoms and their root causes, and improve their relationship with themselves and the community around them. I focus on providing a non-judgmental environment where clients can freely share their story with mental health issues, understand patterns, notice ways they have been coping that have been positive and change unhealthy coping mechanisms. I also work on supporting clients recognize how they relate to themselves and others, increase their sense of control in relationships, and slowly develop ability to have more empathy and compassion for themselves and others.
I like to provide the client the space to talk about what brings them to therapy, identify main symptoms, and set a couple of long term and short term goals for the treatment. My hope is that the client can feel heard and that we created a plan together that we will follow in therapy.
I do not think that a "normal mind" exists. I believe that everyone in this world is in the spectrum for a mental health disorder or diagnostic. I do not just focus on reducing symptoms, I focus on supporting clients understand and improve the way they relate to themselves, their trauma, their symptoms, and their community so that they can feel empowered to make changes they want/need in their lives.
I have noticed that when patients are open to learn about themselves, willing to make small but continuous changes, and hope to heal or feel better, those are the clients in whom I see the most improvement.
I have found that for many of my clients, CBT has been useful to identify and challenge negative thoughts, modify behavior, and develop coping mechanisms for daily use. These small changes can bring significant change and clients feel more empowered and in charge of their symptoms.
I am a huge believer that everyone has the capacity for growth and change. Thus, I focus on meeting clients where they are at, support them in self-exploration, provide them a non-judgmental environment. I believe this is key for clients to improve their relationship with themselves, with their community and start their healing journey.
