Hi! My name is Lori and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor. I have over 20 yrs of experience as a mental health counselor. I have worked in inpatient and outpatient clinics and college counseling centers. My specialty is working with college students and young adults. I am a LGBTQAI ally. Transitions are an amazing time in our life of growth, self reflection and of course, anxiety and depression. I will provide space for you to process and understand your emotions. My speciality is also working with individuals struggling with addiction whether it be to drugs, alcohol, gambling, eating, video gaming etc. I view addiction as behaviors we do to the extreme that are causing us problems. I meet you where you are and explore what you want to be different. We will explore your motivation to change and create a solid plan to move forward. I look forward to meeting you and beginning your mental health journey!
In our first session I will introduce myself. I will answer any questions you have, so please don’t hesitate to ask. We will have a conversation about what brings you in for counseling. Together we will talk about what you would like to be different and how you can get there. At the end of the session we will review what we talked about and you can decide if you would like to schedule another session.
My biggest strength as a provider is that I approach sessions from a strength based perspective. I tend to see the best in others and view challenges as an opportunity for growth. I believe that everyone is capable of change and that we are stronger than we know. I believe that humor is a great coping skill and often use it in sessions. I tend to be direct and transparent with my clients which often creates easy connections and comfort in sessions.
I love working with young adults who are transitioning to the world of “adulthood”! It is an amazing time of growth and self reflection. I help individuals begin to process and understand their emotions and anxieties. I provide direct reflections to explore healthy vs unhealthy thinking patterns. I encourage exploration of these patterns to identify how small shifts in our thinking can bring balance back to our mental health. I also enjoy working with individuals struggling with addiction whether it be to drugs, alcohol, gambling, eating etc. I view addiction as any behavior we do to the extreme that is causing us problems. I begin by meeting individuals where you are and exploring what you want to be different. I have extensive knowledge of addiction and provide direct feedback. I encourage you to explore your motivation to change, barriers and fears of changing and I help you create a solid plan to begin this journey.
My primary method of treatment is CBT. I also use a variety of appoachs that match best with you including person centered therapy, brief solution focused therapy, DBT, motivational interviewing and existential counseling. I believe that each individual is an expert on themselves and will make changes when they are ready. My approach with CBT is to provide a space of active listening to explore and clarify your motivations for counseling. Thoughts and emotions connected to the issue can then be explored to gain insights into pattens, thinking loops and self defeating behaviors. We then work together to identify changes that will lead you towards their goals.
