******* At this time, I am choosing to work only with Individual men, men of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community - ***including those questioning*** - I am not working with couples at this time- “Everyone’s childhood plays itself out.” Our first understanding of ourselves comes from the first people we know. From there, the other relationships we participate in tend to reflect those aspects of ourselves previously learned. I specialize in successfully treating the presenting symptoms of childhood trauma. Including and often self-limiting: substance abuse, social and intrapersonal anxieties, clinical, situational and abandonment depression, and the often self-sabotaging and socially unacceptable yet still ubiquitous unresolved rage. As a California and Arizona Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, I am privileged to work with a variety of highly intelligent and uniquely talented people, who, due to a lifetime of psychological, spiritual and philosophical pain are often the last to be aware of their authenticity as their true value. The kind of pain that breeds overwhelming feelings of anxiety & depression; encourages thoughts of confusion & discourages the truth in one’s potential or abilities. All of which lends itself toward self-destructive behaviors that double down as “proof” of our unworthiness.

I have been a therapist for over 15 years, and I find the most affective treatment is collaborative and tailored to fit each person’s goals and needs. Whether you are coming to therapy to find new coping strategies, change unhelpful patterns, or process traumatic and painful life events, we will work together to make sure that we are always solution-focused and moving steadily toward a place of health and wellness. We cannot always choose what happens to us, or how the human body responds to its environment, but we can learn how to reframe, manage, and better process those experiences. Through an eclectic and psychodynamic approach, I can help you gain skills and insights to feel more at peace, in control, and present in your life.

We live in an increasingly isolated world in which we are convinced on all sides that connection, meaning, and value can be shipped, swiped-on, liked, and plugged into. Social Media's benefits have allowed for unprecedented world-wide connection, but often at the cost of the life experiences that cultivate self-knowledge, character, confidence, and purpose. This leaves many people feeling paradoxically lonely, anxious, depressed, and without a sense of self, meaning, or direction. The therapeutic space and relationship can be a wonderful place to explore what's missing or out of balance in your life. If this resonates with you, my practice might be able to address what you're looking for. With all its flaws, one reason I love the internet is that it has allowed me to collect wisdom from all over the world that helps all of us understand ourselves better. In sessions, I like to find a balance between exploring what's on your mind/heart (openly holding space and following where the conversation leads us) and offering relevant tools and empowering concepts. I've often heard something like, "Thank you for not just asking 'how do you feel about that?' and helping me feel like there's something I can do this week to feel better."

I work with people who wonder why life feels a lot harder for them compared to everyone else. My clients often feel lonely or disconnected, and like they never really fit in. This might come from being neurodivergent, growing up in a high-control religion, living in a rigid family system, or feeling more self-aware than those around them. I work with care, curiosity, and creativity, using approaches rooted in mindfulness and evidence-based practices. My goal is to help you reconnect with your own inner wisdom so you can move through life with clarity, confidence, and compassion—for yourself and for others.

I maintained a private practice in Ventura, CA for about 35 years as a marriage and family therapist and i worked with children, teenagers, adults and couples. About 8 years ago my wife and i moved to Oakland, Ca to be closer to our adult children and our two granddaughters. For the past five years i have volunteered at City Team, Oakland which is a residential placement for men with anger and addiction problems, I wrote the book that i am using to teach the men at City Team and i have self published six other books on parenting, marriage and personal issues; a couple of titles are "Dragon Slaying for Parents (and Couples)" , "The Lost Aspect of Love (sympathy)", "Winning at a Losing Game" and "The First Pictorial Self-Help Book for Men Who Do Not Read". I have conducted hundreds of seminars on parenting, marriage and personal issues. I obtained a masters degree in Petroleum Engineering at UC Berkeley, and worked for Shell Company for five years; not wanting my epitaph to read that i made 10 billion dollars for an oil company and returned to school to obtain a Masters Degree in Counseling. I was a School Psychologist for a school district for five years then opened up my private practice. This experience has proven to be very valuable in counseling with adults,

As a Doctor of Psychology and Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist for 45+ years, I am experienced in helping my clients deal with issues such as Loss and Grief Recovery, Substance Abuse, Anger Management, Crisis Counseling, Stress Reduction, Depression and Anxiety. I provide a calm, empathetic, and nurturing environment where you will feel heard, and most importantly, understood. Together we will work on ways to help you understand your feelings and compulsions. My grieving clients experience closure through writing letters to their loved ones who have died. This letter writing is effective for all forms of loss. Reading the letters aloud is very healing as it encourages acceptance, and permits moving on to build a life filled with love and laughter. I've dealt with my own grief, loss and growth by writing a book series, "The Adventures of the Angel Oleo," as well as "The Dog Bible for Humans - Advice from Dogs to Humans of All Ages." I hope you have an opportunity to read one of my books and that I get to help you, and someone you know.

Hi! I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist, practicing since 2003. I have spent my career helping people find success and feel better about themselves. I have extensive experience working with adolescents and families, as well as individuals with dual diagnosis (mental health issues with substance disorder). The brain is my favorite organ in the human body and I love using education and skills to help people find mastery over their emotions.

If you’re reading this, it means you exist. Based on your religion, culture, or general belief, you may have a meaning for existence. However, no matter your meaning, one thing is clear - existence can be very challenging for us. There are many ways to cope with the challenges of existing, resulting in different experiences. Therapy is just one way to manage the challenges. Therapy There are many ways to approach therapy. One way I like to approach it is to view an individual as a system. In therapy then, we check the system to see what’s working well, what’s neutral, and what’s not going well. In doing this, the goal is to get an individual to admit the reality of things, not what the individual wants or hopes but the present true reality. It's important to identify and understand the reality of an individual because often there are significant fears and or unstable belief in the individual’s ability to manage challenges and get desired results. Lack of control – one of the foundational fears for us is the lack of control we seem to have over ourselves and others. How does one cope with seemingly so little control - from how one comes into existence to how will my friend react if I said no. Whether you’re a veteran in going to therapy or trying it for the first time, we will work as a team to see if we can get you to be how you want to be given the infinite things that are not in your control.

I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in trauma recovery and mood disorders. I provide individual counseling to adults who want to get out of a cycle of uncertainty, make better choices, and understand how they've been affected by things that have happened to them. As part of your overall self-care routine, therapy can be a useful tool for strengthening both coping skills and emotional regulation.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by California rather than a city like LA?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

Will my therapist take EAP:UnitedHealthcare/Optum?

Yes! If you use EAP:UnitedHealthcare/Optum you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have EAP:UnitedHealthcare/Optum you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
