I'm Laura Massey, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist, and Certified Clinical Supervisor in North Carolina. I support adults 18 and over facing challenges related to addiction, anxiety, depression, women's issues, life transitions, and everyday stressors. My ideal client is committed to personal growth and open to meaningful change. Together, we'll work toward healing, resilience, and a more fulfilling life.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first counseling session, we will work together to create a welcoming and supportive environment where you feel comfortable sharing what brings you to therapy. We’ll go over important details, such as confidentiality and session expectations, to make sure you feel informed and safe. You’ll have the opportunity to talk about the challenges you’re facing and what you hope to achieve in therapy. We will also discuss the therapeutic approaches I use and how they can support your journey. This session will focus on getting to know each other, addressing any questions you have, and laying the groundwork for a therapeutic relationship that supports your growth and meaningful change.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

As your counselor, I strive to create a safe, understanding, and supportive space where you feel heard and respected. One of my strengths is my commitment to meeting you where you are and working collaboratively with you. I take time to understand your unique situation, values, and goals, and I approach our work with empathy and an open mind. I am dedicated to using proven strategies to help guide you through challenges, and I continuously adapt my approach to best support your journey. My experience working with a wide range of individuals, including those navigating addiction, anxiety, depression, and life transitions, has helped me develop the skills to provide meaningful and effective support. Ultimately, my goal is to empower you to make lasting change, at your own pace, in a way that feels right for you.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

My clients are adults who are ready to make meaningful changes in their lives. While each person’s journey is unique, many of my clients share common experiences of navigating addiction, anxiety, depression, women’s issues, or significant life transitions. They often feel overwhelmed by the challenges of everyday life and the impact of their environment. What they have in common is a desire for growth, a willingness to explore their thoughts and emotions, and a commitment to creating a more fulfilling and balanced life. If you're ready to take that step, I’m here to support and guide you.

My treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

In my counseling practice, I primarily use Person-Centered Therapy, which means I focus on creating a supportive and empathetic environment where you feel safe and heard. I believe that you are the expert in your own life, and my role is to help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment. By offering unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuine understanding, I aim to empower you to gain insight, build resilience, and make meaningful changes. Our sessions will be guided by your goals and what feels most important to you.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

I sometimes use Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), which is a goal-oriented approach that focuses on your strengths and the solutions that can help you move forward. Rather than concentrating heavily on the problems, we’ll work together to identify what’s already working well in your life and explore practical steps to create positive change. This approach is particularly effective when you’re seeking immediate progress or navigating specific challenges. By highlighting your resilience and exploring future possibilities, we can develop achievable goals and build on your existing strengths.

Motivational Interviewing

I often incorporate Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help you explore and resolve any uncertainties about making changes in your life. This collaborative and non-judgmental approach focuses on your personal motivations and goals. Together, we’ll engage in open conversations that highlight your strengths, clarify your values, and build confidence in your ability to make positive changes. By listening with empathy and asking thoughtful questions, I’ll support you in uncovering your own reasons for change, empowering you to move forward at your own pace.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

In our counseling sessions, I may also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you better understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. CBT is a practical, goal-oriented approach that focuses on identifying and challenging unhelpful thought patterns. By developing healthier perspectives and coping strategies, we can work together to create meaningful changes in your daily life. This evidence-based method is especially effective in managing anxiety, depression, and other challenges by empowering you with tools to navigate difficult emotions and situations.
