Hello, my name is Shameka Morris and I am a qualified and experienced psychotherapist from NYC. I attended Fordham University for my masters degree and specialized in children, adolescents, and families. I also hold post-graduate certification from NYU in trauma- informed clinical practice and child and family therapy. I have had the pleasure of working in my passion as a practicing therapist for over 10 years. Over the years, I have worked with a variety of clients with diverse backgrounds and personal circumstances. I especially understand the courage that it takes to begin the therapeutic process and most importantly, commit to doing the work that is required to overcome complex challenges. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be a supportive anchor and trusted ally during this journey.
The first session will mark the beginning of our therapeutic journey and alliance. Clients can expect to understand more about my experience and therapeutic approach as a professional. However, this will also be an opportunity for me to learn more about the client’s presenting challenges, goals, history, and support systems. This information will be utilized to complete an intake evaluation and collaboratively devise comprehensive treatment plan.
As a psychotherapist, I utilize an empathetic, non-judgmental, and strength-based approach to sustain a productive therapeutic dynamic. Through this approach, I have helped many individuals navigate complex personal circumstances, embrace their therapeutic journey, and gain significant insight into their strengths, goals, and personal needs. I have graciously dedicated my professional purpose to uplifting individuals, families, and communities through this work with a spirit of gratitude, compassion, and intentionality.
The ability to meet people where they are in life is an important part of being a supportive therapist. I am committed to offering a safe virtual therapeutic space where individuals can be vulnerable and authentic. Many of the clients that I have historically served in my practice have a strong desire to increase their motivation, build their self-esteem, improve their relationships, and develop their skill sets to become the best version of themselves. Some have struggled to make healthy choices, conquer their fears, and set boundaries and limits in their relationships with others. I find great reward in helping clients to navigate these issues to achieve their goals to improve their personal circumstances and well being.
As a practitioner, I recognize the value of affirming clients who have experience harm and/or challenges that impacted their self esteem. I have experienced success utilizing a strength-based approach to increase security, improve mood, and motivate clients. My clients have been very responsive to this approach and learned in the process to engage in positive self talk to shift their mindset and identify additional strengths and qualities in themselves.
As a trained trauma-focused CBT practitioner, I understand the importance of creating a safe space that allows my clients to process the impact of traumatic events. I have experienced success with helping clients to build coping strategies to support their healing, while understanding the connection between their behaviors, thought, and emotions regarding the trauma.
As a practitioner trained in child and family therapy, I recognized the importance of healthy family dynamics. I have experienced success with helping families resolve conflict and improve their ability to effectively communicate.
