I am Nancy Malwitz, a Licensed Professional Counselor and I am always looking for ways to help others achieve their goals for growth and resolution of problematic issues in their lives. I spent many years working as a retail manager and learned many things about human behaviors and how to resolve conflict and help mentor and teach others about many life experiences that they may have. I approach issues and concerns with directness and open-minded, outside of the box thinking in order to help those who are seeking guidance for the concerns they have about their lives.
When a client comes for a first session, that time is spent talking about the reason that they are seeking counseling, giving a brief history of what they need help with, and general information about past experiences in counseling or other information that could be pertinent to their struggles. I am laid back and relaxed and don't like to rush through that process so that we have time to get to know each and become comfortable with talking together.
I feel that my greatest strength is being able to connect with others. I have lived a lot of life in my 61 years and have experienced many different situations that have shaped me into the kind of counselor that I am today. I feel that living through these experiences has given me a greater insight into what people experience in their own lives and how those experiences can lead to places of depression and anxiety and trauma. I have insight into how childhood experiences shape a person as a parent and as a spouse, understanding that the family that a person grows up in will influence how they parent and how they choose a partner and what their family may look like as they become adults. I also understand trauma and how it can shape a person's attitude about life and how they respond to different situations and the impact that it has on a person's long-term goals and responses to those kinds of situations. This knowledge comes from my own upbringing and experience with dysfunction in my own life and how I worked to overcome so much that I have experienced and turn it into a positive way to help others overcome similar situations.
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help my clients change their perceptions of themselves and their situations. By addressing how negative thought patterns impact clients, they can begin to see themselves as having the ability to make the changes that they desire in their lives. This can mean that issues that a client may be experiencing, can be resolved by being able to see what those changes look like in themselves.
By using an eclectic approach to therapy with clients, I can adapt and use the therapy that is the most effective and best fit for the client and their issues. The is helpful in adapting to the ever changing needs of the client.
