My name is Chiquita and I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I received my BS in Psychology from the University of Central Florida and my MS in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University. I’ve been working in the counseling field since 2012. I work with all ages especially teens and adults in areas such as anger management, anxiety, low self-esteem, school and peer issues, communication, ADHD and more. I utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy and person centered therapy to assist clients with better functioning in their everyday lives. I listen to my clients and their needs to gain an understanding of their perspectives and presenting issues. The way I tailor sessions depends on the particular client, issues, and needs. Different clients require different methods. I am open, honest, empathetic and non-judgmental, but also tell it like it is.
During your first session I will assess what your presenting problems and symptoms are and we will create a treatment plan identifying what you want to work on to improve your functioning and way of living and go from there.
My greatest strengths as a therapist is being non-judgemental, open minded, empathetic, understanding other’s perspectives, and identifying the issues and origins that clients may not be aware of that are causing problems. I often have clients thank me or tell me that they didn’t realize certain things until I brought it to their attention.
The way we think has a huge affect on the way we function/our behaviors, depending on whether we perceive things in a positive way or a negative way. I enjoy utilizing CBT to assist clients with changing their thoughts in order to better function.
