Hello, My name is Dr. Angela Butler. I am not a provider who has not met my own challenges in life. I was a client before I was a provider and have been in your shoes. I hear you, I see you, and I am here to help. I have been abused, in foster care, domestic violence, among other things in my past and I was able to pull myself up, get back on track, get through school, and am here helping others to walk that same path. I completed my undergrad in psychology, my Masters in developmental psychology, completed all courses in mental health counseling and human behavior, received all available autism training, and my Doctorate is in Developmental Psychology. I have been licensed since 2019 and continue to attend school to evolve my skills and capabilities.
Our first session will involve me discussing with you the type of therapy you are seeking and the process of therapy to include termination of therapy. We will discuss what brought you to therapy and what your expectations of therapy are. We will discuss how we will address trauma in your past and move to the future. We will evaluate my fit for you as your therapist. We will have our first discussion on a topic that you are comfortable with if you deem us a good match.
What has been told to me by almost every client I have worked with is that I understand them, I get what they are going through, they appreciate my self-disclosure, and I have helped them tremendously after spending years with other therapists. I believe my ability to listen, empathy and relatability are three of my greatest strengths as well as I am blunt. When I say blunt, I mean I am to the point, I don't sugar coat things and I say exactly what I mean. I do not repeatedly ask you how does that make you feel, but I get down to why and what to do about it. Solution focused sessions make you feel like therapy is useful to you while providing results. However, for those in need of longer support, I am flexible to that also.
I engage mostly in short-term, solution focused therapy. Everything does not require a life-long commitment to therapy, you can always come back when you need us. I also do couples therapy and family therapy, however I do require individual therapy for all involved first. We are not trying to start a fight or argument and everyone needs to be in a place where they are ready to hear each other. If you are truly ready to work with me and regularly attend therapy then I am the therapist for you.
While addressing trauma is needed, we do not need to retraumatize the client once a week to heal them. I do 3 sessions discussing childhood and family trauma, then we move on to how that is impacting you today and how I can help you manage on a daily level here and now. We go over things you can do to help you with maintaining now and moving past your past. Using the skills you learn in the moment, not just attending therapy with no results.
