Hello there, my name is Joe Sampson, and I would like to take this moment to acknowledge you for your courage in seeking therapy. Your decision to seek therapy, illustrates that you are ready to take an important step towards creating a future where your current struggles are no longer the driving force in your life. My role in this this process is to provide and create a therapeutic relationship by offering a listening ear for you to tell your story and collaboratively work towards your desired goal. As a licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), I am here to support you with evidence-based techniques and strategies to address issues of life stressors, anxiety, depression, familial struggles and significant trauma. Therapy does not have to be a scary process, when you work with the right therapist, it can be a wonderful journey of discovery and healing.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
Our first session will be a time for us to get to know each other and for you to decide if you would like to continue to work with me. I understand that it is not common for someone to immediately let their guard down and essentially share their most fragile parts to a stranger. As sessions progress, clients should expect to work on their identified goals inside and out or the therapy sessions. My belief is that clients should walk away from every session with a feeling of accomplishment, regardless of the progress that has been made.
The treatment methods and tools I utilize
My approach to therapy is to focus on the various strengths of the client. I will often allow a client to take the lead in his or her healing and self-discovery during the therapeutic process. I work with clients to be solution focused and goal oriented as they work from session to session. Clients are sometimes given homework from the session to complete put into practice and follow-up on in subsequent sessions. I also utilize some aspects and tools form Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) as well as some Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Structural Family Therapy, Grief therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) approaches.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
As a therapist I pride myself on the relationship that I create with my clients. I believe that in order for there to be any lasting and meaningful change the therapist and his / her client have to establish a healthy therapeutic relationship/rapport. My experience as a therapist, ranges from working with children, to families and adult clients. I have worked with a diverse group of clients which exemplified for me the importance of being culturally competent. In all of this I can truly say that my passion is working adolescent males and families in urban settings.
