LCSW-C, 1 years of experience
New to Grow
I feel honored that you, my client, have chosen to trust me with deeply personal feelings and memories. I have been a psychotherapist helping clients for more than 30 years, and have worked with people of many different backgrounds, issues, ages, and cultures, including those in the LGBTQ community. If I have the privilege of working with you, you will enjoy my thoughtful questions and empathic comments. We will find out your goals – what you want to change - and work towards those, at your pace, aiming to improve your mental health and relationships. Having been in the field nearly 50 years, I have developed specialties in: helping people with chronic illness, with trauma, parenting, adult marital and partner relationships, adult sibling relationships, and work-related issues.
My first session will focus on what brought you to me, what is the immediate problem, and learning the background for the issue. I will ask about your health, who are your significant others, and some brief educational, work, and family history. I will say at the beginning, "We are going to spend the last ten or fifteen minutes today reviewing what I have heard you say and making sure I got it right. Then we will make a beginning plan of how to approach the issues you bring and make a second appointment if you are comfortable doing so."
In addition to being a psychotherapist, I have been a certified divorce mediator since 2000 and have mediated custody and property decisions for hundreds of couples. This has given me tremendous insight into the separation and divorce experience and broad and in-depth knowledge about resolving conflicts. This knowledge is applicable to many situations my clients face, as conflict is often at the heart of what brings folks to seek psychotherapy. I am also a mosaic artist and you can view my work, including portraits of my heroes, at roslynzinner.com. I am also the co-founder of the Coral Reef Encounter, a yearly event that turns a swimming pool into a coral reef and allows a thousand kids and adults to snorkel its path (coralreefencounter.org) This is an all volunteer event in its sixth year, offered free to all community members.
In deciding how long and how often to meet for therapy sessions, I follow my clients' leads because they always know what they need. For example, I see some clients for five jam-packed problem-solving sessions total, and others biweekly for several years. I listen, listen, listen, to learn who you are, what is important to you, and what you want to change or simply cope with better. Confidentiality and your privacy are always foremost in my actions. Because I am older, I have lived many of the same experiences and difficulties of my clients, and that does give me added insight and the ability to "get it", whether the focus is a loss, a separation or divorce, a long-standing habit, or a trauma.
Because I have practiced a long time, I blend many therapies, especially cognitive-behavioral therapy and Emotionally focused therapy. I start with a depth of empathy and add curiosity about what you are feeling and thinking and what you value. I believe I am especially effective in helping clients with difficult family and nonfamily relationships.
