About me

Hi! I'm a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and licensed clinical addiction counselor (LCAS.) I went to graduate school at the University of Vermont and have provided therapy services for more than 30 years in outpatient mental health settings as well as in inpatient psychiatric and addiction treatment settings. I'm in long-term recovery from alcohol and opiate dependence. Fun fact: I worked on an offshore lobster boat in the Gulf of Maine for 4 years.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our initial session, I can answer any questions that you have about the therapy experience. You can provide me with a description of your understanding of the situation that you find yourself in. We can determine some initial goals of therapy and discuss strategies to achieve those goals. My approach is very client-centered and can be adapted to either short or long-term approaches. Working to co-create an image of a more satisfying future is always a goal.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I have worked with individuals and families in crisis for many years. As a crisis clinician and trained hostage negotiator, I am accustomed to dealing with high-intensity situations and with complex co-occurring disorders. My lived experience of addiction/recovery adds value to my work. My operative premise is that (by and large) most people are doing the best they can. I look to locate and build an individual's strengths.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My passion is working with individuals who have suffered from the consequences of making high-risk decisions. These decisions have resulted in legal, medical, and interpersonal dilemmas. I use a focused, solution-oriented approach designed to explore the context within which these decisions and associated patterns of behavior have become impractical and repetitive. We will explore alternative problem-solving approaches that incorporate mindfulness, paradox, metaphor, and contingency management. My background involves working with individuals/couples/families in crisis.

I believe what lead me to choosing Chip was his overall explanation of how he arrives to solutions to best fit the patient. That intuition was correct, already doing a follow on after first meet.

I have been using Chip off and on for the past year. He's very good. His style is layed back, asking a lot of questions, to get to know you and what you need. He's great about showing up for appointments, and answering messages. He's been a great fit.
