About me

Are you feeling stressed out, zoned out, or off-balance? Do you feel like you're drowning under the weight of responsibilities, while others seem to be thriving? Have you been using social media, toxic relationships, or substances to numb or distract yourself from the discomfort? I'd love to try and help you find your footing and feel more like yourself again. Most of the clients I work with have a lot more in common than they realize. They are struggling...but they believe they SHOULD be able to manage everything! They believe they are somehow flawed or weaker than others. I want you to know it’s okay to be struggling. Prolonged stress and trauma from things like the pandemic, social and political unrest, racism, homophobia, or bullying can greatly impact our mental and physical health. Anxiety, depression, or trauma symptoms may be showing up as a way to say, “Hey, I’m not okay right now. I need to talk about this.” I am here to listen and help you navigate tough situations like these. I have a background in both mental health and medical social work. I have worked in a variety of settings, including outpatient clinics, hospitals, community agencies, and addiction centers. My specialties are grief and loss, mood disorders, and issues facing the LGBTQ+ community. I have worked in this field for over twenty years, and I am more passionate than ever about helping others. I look forward to meeting you soon!

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

I aim to help ease any anxiety you may feel about meeting with a new therapist. My focus is on really listening and understanding what led you to my practice, and what you're hoping to achieve through therapy. Sometimes folks don't have specific goals right away...they just know they want life to feel easier. The first therapy session with me is relaxed and fairly informal. I don’t follow a list of questions or give immediate homework! Hopefully, you’ll smile at least once, and leave feeling a little more hopeful about the future.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

One of my greatest strengths is making others feel special and valued. My natural curiosity, empathy, and caring nature help me connect with clients. I enjoy working with diverse groups, including healthcare professionals, creative artists, individuals dealing with addiction or chronic illness, and the LGBTQ+ community. My medical background gives me a unique edge compared to many therapists. I also bring my lived experience as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and a former performer.

My treatment methods

Integrative

I tailor my whole-person approach to each client and their specific needs. Throughout my career, I have used evidence-based interventions from many modalities, including CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and Creative Arts Therapy. I continue to do trainings and integrate new knowledge into my practice. I also use my life experience to help meet clients where they are.

Grief Therapy

I have extensive experience and training in medical social work. I find that much of what I've learned can be applied to different types of loss, including divorce or job loss. I also help support clients with cumulative grief, when they feel they have not had time to process multiple losses. Grief therapy concepts can also help clients going through difficult transition periods, such as the "empty nest."

Karin is my son's therapist. My son was one of her in-office patients until Covid, then he went into telehealth with her. She is the best therapist my son has ever had, and he has had plenty. She is supportive of my son and me. She doesn't judge him she just takes good care of him. My son has a positive connection with her. My son and I are both grateful for her.

What I love most about Karin is her gentle kindness, compassion and intelligent listening skills -- she seems to always sum up my messy emotions perfectly, adding smart, intuitive perceptions and insights, which is just the kind of therapy I benefit from.
