As an integrated practitioner (therapist, meditation coach, and yoga teacher), I offer a modality that shifts the focus from fixing to realizing. Unlike approaches that seek to modify internal content (thoughts, feelings) to achieve stability, we anchor our work in the unwavering integrity that is already present within you. The core of our collaboration rests on the capacity to embrace the present moment, requiring: radical openness, unreserved honesty, and a willingness to soften old patterns of resistance. I bring deep competence in supporting individuals navigating the challenges of trauma, substance dependency, and neurodiversity (including my own experience with AUDHD). Having served as a veteran and worked extensively with this population, I understand the unique barriers and strengths involved, reiterating that the depth of the work is proportional to the sincerity of engagement. This process is a shared inquiry. I act as a mirror and a compass, offering guidance to help you navigate toward the innate wisdom that already holds the answers. The true authority resides in your own developing awareness. Secure online sessions in Indiana, Arizona, Texas, New Hampshire, and Illinois. Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter assessments are available for $250. This fee includes all assessment tools and labor for writing the letter. Prerequisites: You must have a history of trying other treatments for your condition, such as medication and therapy. Disclaimer: The assessment is not a guarantee that a letter will be written. Integrity: Please do not pursue this assessment if your primary goal is simply to get a dog into an apartment that has a no-pet policy. The assessment is a clinical necessity evaluation. Note: I do use ai due to issues connected to being a veteran. Must consent.

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

The purpose of our initial session is to establish a clear, collaborative foundation. We will focus on three key areas: Mutual Understanding: Gaining insight into your background and the specific challenges you wish to address. Goal Alignment: Clearly defining your aspirations for growth and transformation. Process Overview: Articulating the structure of my approach and how we will work together to achieve your desired outcomes. Crucially, this session serves as a dedicated opportunity for mutual fit and resonance. It is essential that you feel comfortable and confident in the guidance I offer. Please feel free to reach out with any preliminary questions before our meeting.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

1. The Distinction Between Self and Mechanism We operate from the premise that the body and the thinking mind (the neurological system and its habitual processes) are, essentially, complex instruments—the "machine" and the "computer" of the self. While incredibly sophisticated, these are not your ultimate identity. Your true self is the fundamental awareness and animating force that observes, sustains, and powers this mechanism. 2. The Focus on Innate Wholeness Unlike methods centered on reforming the "computer's code" (changing specific thoughts and feelings), we begin by anchoring in the truth that the power source is already whole and flawless. Symptoms of anxiety, trauma, or dysregulation are viewed as signals of "lag" or computational overload within the system, not deficiencies in the true self. 3. Method: The Art of Resetting the System My methods are designed to facilitate what is metaphorically known as "turning the machine off and on again." This translates into techniques focused on: Disidentification: Learning to recognize the brain and nervous system's output (thoughts, emotions, defense mechanisms) as temporary data, rather than absolute reality. Embodied Presence: Utilizing practices (informed by meditation and yoga) to shift awareness away from mental abstraction and into the somatic, moment-to-moment reality of the body, thereby allowing the system to naturally recalibrate. Restoration of Flow: The goal is not permanent alteration of the "code," but the ability to consciously interrupt patterns of reactivity and allow the natural, inherent coherence of the self to restore equilibrium when the system becomes "laggy" or overwhelmed. Results Clients typically report results centered on durable resilience and inner liberation. They gain the capacity to observe internal distress without being consumed by it, leading to a profound sense of peace and unconditional s

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My practice is uniquely structured for individuals ready to move beyond managing symptoms and engage in profound inner inquiry and fundamental transformation. I am best positioned to support prospective clients who meet the following criteria: By Mindset & Approach The Willing Explorer: Clients who possess a core commitment to honesty, openness, and willingness to engage with their internal landscape, even when challenging. The Shared Inquirer: Those who view therapy as a collaborative dialogue, prepared to both share deeply and accept guidance in navigating their own self-discovery. The Priority on Awareness: Individuals who are ready to temporarily suspend habitual defenses and bring compassionate, conscious attention to their inner experience. By Concern & Goals The Deeply Curious: Anyone interested in integrating the transformative insights of meditation, yoga philosophy, and somatic awareness into their therapeutic journey. The Neurodiverse Seeker: Individuals navigating the complexities of neurodiversity (including AUDHD) who seek an approach that honors their unique processing style and inherent validity. The Trauma and Substance Navigator: Those seeking a robust, embodied path through trauma recovery and substance use challenges that addresses the root mechanism of disconnection rather than just behavioral modification. The Veteran Community: Veterans prepared to bring the same level of discipline and commitment used in service to their own inner healing and integration. Ultimately, my work is for those seeking to recognize and live from the place of innate wholeness that already exists, rather than striving to create it.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

This is a gentle, body-up mindfulness therapy designed to guide you toward resting in your fundamental state of pure awareness—the silent, unchanging knowing that observes every passing thought, feeling, and sensation. The core of this practice is rooted in recognition, not remediation: No Fixing: We do not attempt to alter, eliminate, or repair challenging thoughts or emotional states. No Fighting: We cease the inner struggle and resistance against what is present in the moment. Instead, we focus on recognizing what you already are: the whole, complete, and spacious container in which all experience arises and subsides. By shifting identification from the content of your experience (thoughts, feelings) to the unconditional awareness that holds it, you discover a profound and enduring source of peace and stability. This therapy utilizes embodied practices to access this state, ensuring the change is integrated physically, leading to true, lasting rest in your inherent nature.

Mind-body approach

This therapeutic approach is grounded in body-first, awareness-second principles, offering a powerful integration of mind-body medicine with deep contemplative practice. We utilize advanced techniques to create lasting shifts in your core experience: Mind-Body Medicine: We blend key somatic methods, including somatic tracking, polyvagal theory , and trauma release exercises, to gently work with the body's stored history and autonomic responses. Contemplative Practice: This is synthesized with iRest (Integrative Restoration) mindfulness, guiding you beyond the confines of thoughts and feelings to rest as pure being—the silent, unconditional knowing that observes every tension, every breath, and every fleeting sensation. Our philosophy is simple yet profound: We don't treat the body; we listen through it. By tuning into the body's inherent wisdom, we bypass the cognitive loops that perpetuate suffering, facilitating a deep recognition of your foundational wholeness. This is not about fixing or striving, but about recognizing the peace that is already present as your essential nature.

Somatic

This is a body-led, awareness-revealed therapy that masterfully fuses leading somatic practices with deep contemplative work. We utilize the wisdom of the body as the primary pathway to peace, blending: Somatic Experiencing (Peter Levine & Trauma Release): Techniques focused on resolving the physical imprints of trauma, allowing for the gentle discharge of held tension and the restoration of natural regulation. iRest (Integrative Restoration) Mindfulness: A form of meditative inquiry that guides you to rest as pure being—the silent, unconditional knowing that holds every tremor, every pulse, and every breath without judgment or need for change. Our practice operates under a profound principle: We don’t manage the body; we listen until it dissolves into you. By bringing mindful presence to the physical experience, we move beyond the reactive mind and allow the inherent wholeness of pure awareness to be revealed. This process results in a sustainable, embodied peace that is not achieved, but recognized.

Trauma Informed Care

My practice is fundamentally rooted in Trauma-Informed Care (TIC), ensuring that every interaction and technique prioritizes safety, transparency, and collaboration. This approach recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and understands the potential paths for recovery, viewing symptoms not as pathology, but as survival responses. Principles in Practice In working with clients, I emphasize key principles of TIC: Safety and Trustworthiness: I maintain a predictable, secure, and non-judgmental environment. This includes transparent communication about the therapeutic process and maintaining clear boundaries. Choice and Collaboration: You are always viewed as the expert on your own experience. I offer a range of practices (like EMDR, IFS, or somatic work) and guide you in selecting the tools that feel right and safe for you, ensuring the pace is entirely client-led. Empowerment and Voice: The focus is on recognizing your strengths and resilience. We actively work to restore the sense of agency that trauma often diminishes, honoring your insights and prioritizing your voice in all decisions. Peer Support and Mutuality: While I hold a professional role, my own experience as a veteran and an AUDHD individual fosters genuine connection and mutual respect, acknowledging the healing power of shared experience. By integrating these principles with advanced modalities (such as Somatic Experiencing and iRest), we create a secure foundation that allows your nervous system to gently release stored tension and begin the profound process of self-regulation and healing.

Rick is an amazing person, full of compassion, insights and tools. I love how he listens and picks out key ideas from my rambling and has the ability to shine a light on both my strengths and opportunities to try new approaches for healing. The trauma I experienced was significant enough to admit that I needed help. Rick is an amazing guide helping me recover and see a future that is mine to create.
