Welcome! My name is Maria Acosta, I am a bilingual and bicultural psychotherapist with 10 years of experience working with adults struggling with Depression, Anxiety and/or Trauma. It is not easy to open up and share our struggles. Only when we feel safe and contained we can take that scary step, and eventually feel relieved. I am passionate about supporting women in their journeys to mental and emotional wellbeing.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In our first session we will talk about your concerns, struggles, symptoms, relationships, family history, and other areas that might have an impact on your Mental Health. I will explain my therapeutic style, answer your questions and establish goals for treatment.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My capacity to connect with clients with kindness and compassion make them feel so safe that they can explore their deepest wounds and transform their pain. I am attuned to my patients and respectfully point out struggles that they might not be aware of. I gently guide their exploration and provide them with tools that expand their self-awareness, self-regulation and self-compassion.

My treatment methods

Somatic

Our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes can positively or negatively affect our biological functioning. I will teach you somatic tools to learn to listen to your body when you experience fear, worry, anger, sadness and other uncomfortable emotions or sensations. We can't continue running away from our experiences. We can work together so you can finally transform those experiences.

Psychodynamic

This is a form of talk therapy that explores the connection between a patient's past experiences and their current mindset. Let me help you explore, reflect and understand the root of some of your behaviors, feelings and beliefs. When you gain awareness of how you are being influenced by those experiences, you can make conscious decisions about how to live your life.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

I utilize MBT approaches to teach my patients how to cope with anxiety. When we focus on the present moment, when we slow down our breath, the physical symptoms of anxiety will subside, your mind will be clear and you will see things from a different perspective.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

When we face problems and our focus is on the problem and how we feel about it, we need to stop and look at what we have within ourselves to overcome the situation. I have been provided a contained space for my patients to reflect, become aware and trust that they have what it takes to overcome the struggles they are facing: depression, low self-esteem, self-doubt.
