Hi, I'm Abel Garcia, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over two decades of experience in the mental health field. My journey began in 1999, working in child and family welfare, and has since evolved into a dedicated practice focused on helping individuals aged 13 and up navigate life's challenges. I believe it is important to create a sense of safety and security in my practice. With safety comes vulnerability, and when we reach that space we will do our best work to help you feel seen, accepted, heard, and loved. Throughout my career, I've supported clients through a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including those who feel overwhelmed by the stresses of life, are battling low moods, or find themselves constantly worrying. Whether it's the weight of the past, the pressures of the present, or concerns about the future, I work alongside you to help ease these burdens. I specialize in trauma, adult ADHD, disordered eating, and body image/self-worth concerns. My therapeutic approach is integrative, combining Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with humanistic techniques to create a holistic, strength-based experience for my clients. Having faced my own struggles with body image and self-worth, as well as managing ADHD as an adult, I understand the importance of having a safe, supportive space where you can be vulnerable and feel truly understood. Therapy with me is a partnership where you can expect to be met with empathy, humor, and a genuine desire to help you uncover your strengths and achieve your goals. For those who may find it difficult to open up—especially men. My goal is to create a space where you can tackle what’s on your mind without feeling judged or pushed. We’ll work at your pace, focusing on what matters most to you.

Hi, I’m a licensed therapist, clinical supervisor, and the proud owner of Sunshine Holistic Health. With two Ivy League degrees — an M.Phil. in Professional Counseling and an M.S.Ed. in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Pennsylvania — I bring both extensive clinical expertise and a compassionate, holistic approach to the work I do. I specialize in supporting individuals who are ready to invest in their mental, emotional, and physical well-being. My practice is built on the belief that healing happens when we care for the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — and create space for people to reconnect with themselves in meaningful ways. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, trauma, life transitions, or relationship challenges, I’m here to provide a safe, supportive, and collaborative environment where you can grow and heal at your own pace. In addition to individual therapy, I offer clinical supervision and mentoring for fellow therapists, helping them develop their skills while honoring their own self-care and professional growth. At Sunshine Holistic Health, my goal is to create a warm, welcoming space where clients feel truly seen, valued, and empowered to live the lives they deserve.

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in our soul, and sings the tunes without the words, and never stops at all." Emily Dickinson "As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), I bring a wealth of therapeutic expertise and an unwavering commitment to supporting individuals and families on their unique journeys. I view counseling as a collaborative, confidential partnership where my primary role is to provide an empathetic and non-judgmental space for exploration and growth. I employ a diverse array of therapy models and strategies, but I also recognize the immense power of simply listening and understanding. Together, we will delve into your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, exploring their impact on both your personal well-being and your relationships with others. My approach is action-oriented and empathetic, geared towards identifying practical solutions for your current challenges, ultimately enhancing your outlook and circumstances. I understand that seeking counseling can be intimidating, and I want to assure you that my focus is not on judgment but on helping you resolve issues and make choices that align with your goals for a more fulfilling life. Trauma hurts. It can be sudden, life-altering and overwhelming, or chronic, subtle and nearly unnoticeable, but either way it can change the way we think about others, the world, and unfortunately, ourselves. Dealing with the aftermath—changes in our relationships, lashing out toward self or others, feeling nothing and/or everything all at once—is sometimes as hard as the initial event, especially when society, friends and family and our own minds tell us to “just get over it.” Worse, sometimes we aren’t even sure where the trauma came from in the first place, leaving us confused and even feeling hopeless. If you could just “get over it,” you would, but sometimes the brain simply cannot process traumatic events without help, and this is why trauma therapy exists. :) I'm an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) in Texas. I've been in practice for nearly 15 years and have been doing EMDR therapy for 13 of those. I specialize in helping teens and adults process trauma of all kinds. My goal is to help my clients gain the skills needed to process and adapt to traumatic memories, and then allow them to do so in a safe environment. I teach them how to build boundaries and follow through, and to treat themselves with self-compassion rather than judgment and harsh expectations. Trauma doesn’t have to ruin (or run) your life. If you’re hurting, please know I’d be happy to help in any way I can.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Texas rather than a city like Dallas?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Texas from Houston to Austin! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Texas.

Will my therapist take Aetna?

Yes! If you use Aetna you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have Aetna you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Mood Disorders?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Mood Disorders, is filtering therapists in Texas that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
