**Hello there! My name is Alexis Staton, LCSW-C.** I am a first-generation graduate and postgraduate African American cisgender female dedicated to breaking generational cycles. My own life experiences have drawn me to this field, and I understand that doing the work on oneself is a significant and challenging task. I hold both a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a Master of Social Work with a focus on Urban Child Welfare and Families from Morgan State University. As an interventionist, I strive to connect authentically with my clients, empowering them to embrace all their experiences, which ultimately shape who they are and how they "show up in the world." As a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (LCSW-C) mental health therapist, I bring almost a decade of clinical experience to my practice. I have provided both intensive and outpatient treatment, helping clients overcome anxiety, depression, and trauma through various treatment modalities designed to promote optimum functionality. My work often included participating on interdisciplinary teams, maintaining ongoing collaboration with primary care providers, psychiatrists, and public school IEP teams, among others. This holistic approach ensures comprehensive care and supports the diverse needs of my clients. My goal is to facilitate healing and growth, helping individuals achieve their best possible mental health and well-being.

My goal is to help you uncover your strengths, build values-based coping strategies, and embark on a journey of personal growth. In doing this work, I have discovered that the best way to move through emotional pain is to allow yourself to feel it. That can be incredibly overwhelming but with caring and consistent support, it becomes manageable. It is deeply healing to be heard and cared for in those vulnerable states and to understand that by attending to early emotional injuries, a path toward an authentic connection to yourself and others is not only possible, but achievable.

If you are looking for a therapist who will spend time figuring out your personal needs- whether that is how we work together or what specific mode of treatment works best for you- I believe that I may be a good fit for you. I have spent my years as a therapist both keeping abreast of all of the most up-to-date approaches to care, but more importantly, I continue to challenge myself as an individual to consider the needs of the people and world around me so that I may offer the best treatment possible. Mental healthcare is my passion, and I pride myself on not only providing a high quality of care, but also being a therapist that my clients can look to expect a close and collaborative relationship. Therapy can be challenging, but it also can be a time to enjoy being able to focus on you alone in a warm and supportive environment.

Often, we all go through difficult times. Times of despair, painful circumstances, and distress; Situations that many times affect our peace of mind and our relationships with ourselves and others. Sometimes, we even question the purpose of our lives because we feel like there is no purpose for what we are going through. As a caring clinician, I allow and encouraged my client to create a space for healing, where they feel in control of choosing their own path to freedom and sense of control.

A client comes in to see her therapist and is 10 minutes late. She sits down and apologizes for her tardiness, to which the therapist replies that no apologies are necessary as clients are only late for their first session. The vignette illustrates something that I see in clients repeatedly who come into my office. Many should have come in at least a year or two ago but for some reason think that the problems they experience are still manageable. While I admire the will of many of those who still manage life like the proverbial Dutch Boy and the dike, I believe that asking for help is a strength of its own. In therapy, I come from the perspective of someone that had to receive help at various times in my life. I've also had a meandering career path, meaning that I've worked in several fields and industries prior to becoming a therapist and have been able to do ground-level empathizing with people who work in blue and white-collar professions.

I am Dr. Kao and I have my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I have over 15 years of experience working with a wide range of patients: in-patient, residential, outpatient/community mental health, substance abuse/eating disorders, and more. Since I was a child, people have always felt safe to share their stories with me and I have honed that into a skill of providing the space for patients to be open and vulnerable in therapy. I love being a part of a patient's journey to healing, self-awareness, and growth. I am always grateful when patients do me the honor of permitting me to walk alongside them therapeutically. In my current practice, I use my passion for facilitating every patient's journey through life and emphasizing the need for an authentic connection between myself and the patient. I am a professor, mentor, coach, and clinician, and am keen to look at a person’s unique lived experience and how it intersects with the systematic nature of culture, systems, and historical factors. I have presented at conferences, conducted professional training events and community workshops, and have been interviewed for radio programs, podcasts, and publications.
