Hello. I am a licensed Clinical Mental Health Social Worker/Therapist with 30 years of experience. I have practiced in the states of California and Indiana, and received my graduate education through Purdue University and Indiana University. I enjoy working with individuals and couples. I particularly like to promote optimal living, in which healthy living habits, including health-promoting diet, exercise, spirituality, creative expression, and service to others, is practiced. My therapeutic orientation is holistic, with use of cognitive-behavioral therapies, hypnotherapy, eye-movement desensitization & reprocessing (EMDR), and humanistic-existential therapy. Currently I am providing therapy remotely through tele-mental health.
Initially, I do a complete evaluation, exploring the reason that you are seeking therapy, symptoms and their impact in your life, previous mental health treatment, and your expectations for therapy. A session with me is characterized as exhibiting warmth, empathy, humor, honest self-reflection, learning life skills and about the neuro-mechanisms responsible for anxiety, depression, and the symptoms of trauma.
Compassionate & empathetic, patient, a good listener, lots of experience and success, rational and logical, emphasize finding wholeness & happiness, self-disclosive, able to sit with the pain of others. I love what my professional path has been. Therapy has been the gift that keeps on giving. I invite you to share your questions and to discuss what you want in your life.
I have worked with general mental health populations (community mental health), but also college students (a university counseling center), couples counseling (private practice), military veterans (the San Francisco VA Medical Center), and geriatric populations (through providing psychiatric care to nursing care facility patients). I value being able to pass on skills necessary to coping and to growth, and espouse our human potential for optimal living. I recommend approaching therapy with an inquisitive mind, and a commitment to making healthy changes in yourself.
Cognitive focus to enable recognition of impact of thoughts and beliefs upon emotional activation, and learning to trouble-shoot negative thinking patterns. Somatic/behavioral focus to learn physiological basis of emotional states, and how to recognize and defuse unpleasant emotion states.
Utilization of EMDR to reduce/defuse negative affect and effect cognitive reprocessing (enabling more realistic and accurate cognitive appraisals of internal and external states, including memories).
Hypnosis to "change the channel" on pain, to effect more accurate cognitions about pain, and to utilize the mind & body's capacity to reduce and/or eliminate pain.
Learn skills to communicate more effectively, to be more self-aware about your negativity in the relationship and defusing that, instilling more empathy and caring into the relationship, and viewing the relationship as a shared project that requires work, patience, caring & commitment.
