Hello! My name is Shyanne and I am an Art Therapist and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist living and working in San Diego. For more than 15 years, I've worked with young people, their families, and adults, offering support as they creatively engage their strengths to overcome obstacles and enhance their lives. Art making in therapy is a great way to support communication, growth, and resilience during times of personal challenge. I work from an inclusive, strengths based, and trauma informed lens. I look forward to getting to know you!
The first session is an exporation. It's a chance for us to find out what's important to you and how you want to grow. I'll offer opportunities to play, create images, have fun, and engage your imagination to support us as we get clear about what you want out of your time in therapy. Together we will create some goals and decide on a plan that uses your strengths to get us there.
As an Art Therapist with over 15 years of experience working with adults, children, teens, and families, I've found that the use of art and play supports comfort during sessions, helps build connections, and enhances resilience to overcome many challenges for participants of all ages. These techniques have been helpful to many of my clients to support communication, manage behavior challenges, reduce anxiety and attention concerns, improve mood, and process grief and trauma. Art and play activities can provide grounding, support insight and develop skills that help you in your day to day life.
There are so many areas of joy and connection to explore and strengthen in relationships. There are also challenges that get in the way of enjoying and feeling safe in relationships. The challenges of managing work stress, balancing priorities, and finding time for ourselves can begin to overwhelm our system and bring additional suffering. In families, parents are often working long hours and struggling to manage challenging behavior of their children. Children and teens can get overwhelmed with competing priorities of school, activities, and socializing. It's easy to get stuck in a rut! I have seen countless individuals and families find their way back to enjoying their life and connection to others by working on a plan that matches their values and goals. Each person and family is different. I look forward to joining you as a partner to find the right balance for you.
As a culturally sensitive therapist, I seek to understand the values, beliefs, and personal stories of my clients, working together to bring forward the wisdom held within themselves and their community to support their progress toward goals. I try not to make assumptions or use my own experince as a guide, rather I seek to find what works best for each of my clients.
Flexibility in approaches is an important part of the work I do. I draw from a variety of interventions to see what fits best with the person I'm supporting. Treatment is customized, flexible, and matches a person's experience, interests, developmental stage, values, and personality while keeping in line with best practices and standards of care related to supporting safety. I embrace a systemic perspective that centers the person within their context. The techniques I may use include Art Therapy, play interventions, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Trauma-Focused CBT, Family Therapy, Psychodynamic, and Narrative approaches. Sessions are grounded in humanistic, attachment-based, trauma informed, and culturally alligned approaches along with somatic and Polyvagal theory techniques. When working with children, I incorporate frequent family therapy sessions with caregiver(s) and at times siblings/extended family. When working with adults, I focus on your internal experience and strengthening releationships that are important to you with people who help you feel safe. Sessions with clients of all ages can involve play or artmaking to support expression. As a white, cis-gender female, I seek to provide services from a standpoint of empowerment, allyship, and affirmation of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC clients. I appreciate the trust it takes to invite someone to join you on your journey and welcome feedback from clients to further support emotional safety as we work together.
