Welcome! My name is Bria Smith and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker based in Michigan and I am also licensed in New Jersey. I received my Bachelor's degree from Oakland University and shortly went on and received my Master's degree from Wayne State University. My clinical focus during my Master's program was in the Psychodynamic Theory and the Family Systems Theory. Most of my work history has been in community mental health, so I had the privilege of being exposed to many different types of mental health concerns and diagnoses (i.e. anxiety, depression, personality disorders and bipolar disorders). I understand the complexity of the human experience and I’m fully aware there is no “one size fits alI” treatment approach for everyone. This is why I prioritize meeting my individuals where they are and figuring out what is going to work best to serve them at that time! I am eager to collaborate with individuals and help them see realistic and sustainable change in their lives.
Our first session will mainly consist of introductions, a conversation about your expectations as my client and me getting to know you a bit and what presenting problems you find yourself facing. Most of my clients find this appointment to be very easygoing and more of a conversation versus a impersonal interview. The goal is for you to feel confident in continuing on with therapy!
My greatest strengths as a therapist have been my ability to connect with individuals quickly by finding the common ground between us, my ability to see things from my client's perspective and gently provide alternative perspectives, and my eagerness to see my clients win! I am also very empathetic, but I am able to be objective, so my clients are getting the feedback they need.
My passion is working with individuals who find themselves struggling to increase their confidence and self-esteem. I believe a strong sense of self is the basis for creating healthy boundaries, habits and the overall life a person wishes to achieve for themselves. I also do well with individuals that have unresolved childhood/adolescent trauma and are looking to process these events and move forward from them.
I had the pleasure of studying the psychodynamic theories during my Master's program. I enjoy utilizing this perspective to assist clients in understanding how our childhood and adolescent experiences have helped shaped our current behaviors, thoughts, triggers and patterns. I also help clients understand how the subconscious operates in our every day lives in order to take the power away from some of these undesired patterns and behaviors we possess.
I was able to work under therapy staff and watch how CBT was used with individuals. CBT offers a very practical way of understanding how our thoughts ultimately turn into outward (and inward) behaviors. I enjoy working from this framework to help guide individuals in regaining control of their negative thoughts/beliefs and reframing them in order to change unhealthy behaviors and coping skills.
Psychoeducation, in my opinion, is a large part of the therapy process because I believe with understanding comes true and sustainable change. My job is to make sure my clients understand different therapy terms and theories in order to deepen their understanding of themselves and the issues they wish to resolve.
My background as a community mental health provider has allowed me to work with individuals from all walks of life with all sorts of mental health diagnoses. I believe that individuals who have experienced trauma need a specialized approach when it comes to therapy and I have no problem exploring what works best for individuals.
