Hello - I am a Licensed Clinical Social worker in Maryland, with more than 20 years' experience in multiple settings. I've worked in the criminal justice system, a state psychiatric hospital and at a national non-profit focusing on providing assistance to disaster-impacted individuals and communities. I chose to be a social worker, in part, because I wanted to help people, but also because social work has a strengths-based perspective at its core; I believe every individual has unique strengths, and I welcome the opportunity to help you find yours.
During our first session together, I am likely to have a number of questions for you, including people and events you consider a significant part of your history, and also your reasons for seeking therapy. I will also make sure that you have an opportunity to ask questions. You may have a number of goals for therapy, and we'll work together to help you decide what is most important as an area of focus. I have sometimes described my approach to therapy as the two of us together on a bus. You're the driver with a destination in mind, and I'm the navigator helping to ensure that we stay on course to your chosen destination.
I have 20+ years of experience, and have a rather informal approach. Seeking therapy can be a bit frightening, and I believe I have the ability to make people feel comfortable in order to make the process a bit less scary. Therapy is a safe space to share your fears, hopes and dreams, and you should feel comfortable knowing that the therapist/client relationship protects your privacy.
I enjoy working with adults (18 & up), and have worked with individuals struggling with serious mental health issues, as well as those who have faced grief and loss, felt insecure and struggled to take next steps.
I have found Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to be helpful for a number of clients who are struggling with anxiety, depression or relationship issues. While I don't believe therapy is best delivered as a "one size fits all" approach, I feel that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be a tool in the toolbox that can be used in a variety of ways.
I find that an Eclectic approach to therapy helps me to find the "best fit" for a client's presenting issues. While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be helpful for a wide range of issues that lead clients to seek therapy, sometimes there are other approaches that can be helpful as well.
