We can find ourselves in a place where we no longer recognize the person in the mirror - that may be due to symptoms of depression or anxiety, effects of trauma, changes in identity, values, or circumstance, or a number of other things. While our past informs who we are today, it does not have to dictate where we are going tomorrow. I hope to work with you so we can understand how your experiences have come to create patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, and how we can use this knowledge to recover from the past and create a life that feels worth living. Therapy with me brings together treatment modalities in a way that is tailored uniquely to you, your goals, and your needs. My therapeutic approach is eclectic and incorporates a variety of evidence-based interventions, including DBT, CBT, and EMDR. I also integrate neurobiology so you can understand why your mind and body are operating the way they are.
The first session (or first few sessions, really) can be riddled with uncertainty and anxiety. I understand that beginning a new therapeutic relationship can feel strange...because it kind of is. We don't typically meet someone for the first time and share so much of ourselves. It is a vulnerable place to be, and I make every effort to put you at ease. This is a journey we are on together, side-by-side. During our first session, we will discuss what is bringing you to therapy now and your expectations of both myself and the therapy process. We will spend some time reviewing your history at a pace and depth that feels comfortable for you. We will also start exploring your goals for therapy, thinking about what you'd like to see change in your life, skills you'd like to learn, and areas you'd like to grow in.
I believe you are the expert on your life, and I am here to help you find and utilize the resources within yourself to build the life you desire. Together, we can process the past, live in the present, and lay the foundation for a healthy future. I look forward to providing you compassionate care as we go on this journey of discovery together.
Remi Larson offers therapy covered by Central California Alliance for Health (Medi-Cal), Gold Coast Health Plan (Medi-Cal), L.A. Care Health Plan (Medi-Cal), Orange County Mental Health Plan (Medi-Cal), Partnership HealthPlan of California (Medi-Cal) and San Francisco Health Plan (Medi-Cal) in California.
I incorporate interventions from CBT to help you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and behavior interact to create unhelpful patterns in your life. CBT uncovers where these patterns originated from and what purpose they serve and provides skills for developing alternative ways of thinking.
I use DBT skills to support you in accepting reality while encouraging desired change. DBT gives tangible skills for living mindfully, tolerating distress, regulating emotions, and navigating interpersonal relationships.
I utilize EMDR to help you heal from past traumas, both "big" and "small," and other distressing experiences. EMDR facilitates healing by transforming the relationship we have with our trauma through reprocessing. Unlike other treatments for trauma, EMDR does not require you to go into detail or relive these distressing experiences.
I use strategies from Emotionally Focused Therapy with both individuals and couples/polycules to explore attachment. Emotionally Focused Therapy promotes security in the relationship we have with ourself and in the relationships we have with others through emotional processing and resiliency building.
Gender-affirming therapy is central in my work. I strive to create a space where you not only feel seen, but safe to explore the joys and challenges of being trans, nonbinary, or gender diverse.
