Hi, I am Dr. McKeithen, a licensed psychologist with over 25 years of clinical experience working with clients in a variety of settings. I obtained my Masters and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Auburn University. I enjoy working with culturally diverse individuals with a broad range of psychological problems and life issues. I specialize in women's issues, trauma resolution, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, stress management, race-based traumatic stress and compassion fatigue.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I provide a safe, affirming and non-judgmental environment to help my clients heal, grow and move forward. My goal is to provide quality, evidence-based care to help you reach your potential by helping you overcome barriers that are preventing you from establishing healthy boundaries, healthy relationships, personal growth and maintaining inner peace.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

While I am an approachable down to earth therapist, I believe that therapy should resemble more than talking to a good friend. I provide an engaging, ethical approach to therapy that incorporates both psycho-education and evidenced-based strategies. I believe very strongly in providing my clients with the necessary knowledge to empower them as they collaborate with treatment decisions

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

My passion is to assist my clients through their most complex and difficult matters. I am trained to use trauma-focused strategies to treat clients with PTSD and other trauma responses that may stem from military, sexual trauma, childhood, medical trauma, racial trauma, and community violence. I am also well skilled in treating common mental health difficulties such as anxiety and depression, anger, maladaptive responses to stressor and prolonged grief responses. I am passionate about women's mental health and empowering individuals to create a better life. My "typical" clients are professional and career focused women who struggle with high expectations and perfectionism and women experiencing difficulty with family and relationship stressors, as well as those seeking to rebuild their lives after a tragedy or a devastating life event.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I’ve been using CBT in my practice for the past 25 years. It has proven helpful in allowing clients to challenge reoccurring thoughts and manage their anxiety and depression. We will use CBT to recognize how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other. We’ll then use that knowledge to change your thinking patterns, which will help you lead to a less stressed life. I use this modality to treat anxiety, depression, insomnia, and assist with the management of stress, insomnia, pain, obsessive-compulsive disorder and anger.

Cognitive Processing (CPT)

I have used CPT for the past eight years to assist clients with PTSD and other trauma responses that may stem from combat, military/adult sexual trauma, childhood sexual trauma, medical trauma, and community violence. It is conducted over a structured number of sessions (typically 10-12) and focuses on trauma-related responses such as guilt/shame, intimacy, esteem, trust and sense of safety. The goal is also to reduce feelings of helplessness and increase a sense of control. Treatment allow for the client to apply cognitive restructuring techniques and coping strategies to various aspects of their lives.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy

I have used PE for the past seven years to assist clients with PTSD and other trauma responses that may stem from combat, military/adult sexual trauma, childhood sexual trauma, medical trauma, and community violence. I primarily use PE to help clients confront and process traumatic memories in a systematic and controlled manner. I use it to reduce the symptoms of PTSD, such as intrusive memories, flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance behaviors, and heightened arousal. It is not suitable for every client, and the decision to use this treatment modality is carefully evaluated and determined by this provider.

EMDR

I have used EMDR for the past two years to provide a structured and effective approach for processing traumatic memories, reducing emotional distress, and promoting adaptive functioning. Used to assist clients with PTSD and other trauma responses that may stem from combat, military/adult sexual trauma, childhood sexual trauma, medical trauma, and community violence. I may use EMDR in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities to address a range of psychological issues.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

I have used Solution-Focused Brief Therapy for the past 15 years. It is designed to be a brief and time-limited therapy. The focus is to guide clients toward constructing a more positive and preferred future by leveraging their strengths, resources, and inherent capacity for change. It is a goal-oriented, strengths-based therapeutic approach that focuses on the present and future rather than dwelling extensively on past problems.
