Hello and welcome! My name is Carlton Hemphill, a 32-year-old Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in the state of Illinois. I received my Masters from University in Clinical Psychology-Counseling Practice with a concentration on child and families. I have been working in the field since 2015, and practicing as an independent clinician in my own private practice since June 2023. My background is in behavioral and cognitive theories; my therapeutic approach is rooted in the notion that behaviors are learned through our environment, and that belief systems and interpretations of life events reinforce behavioral patterns.
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
Our first session is an opportunity for us to introduce ourselves and get to know each other a little more to see if we feel like each other are a good fit. Therapeutic relationship and rapport is the #1 thing that make therapy successful. I will review your intake form that you completed and ask follow-up questions about that, allowing you opportunity to elaborate more on your responses. I know first sessions can be nerve-racking for some, so to help ease the tension, I also open the floor for you to ask me questions as well, so that it does not feel like an interrogation.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
My communication style I create a nonjudgmental, empathic therapy environment despite sessions being telehealth and not in person. I communicate directly and honestly, and will often ask thought-provoking questions. I provide unbiased feedback and allow you to come to your OWN conclusions, and I emphasize your agency in every decision you make.
