I am a Queer, Black Woman who has over 38 years of experience working in mental health field and healing. I began my career in 1986 as a Registered Music Therapist then transitioned to working as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in 2002. I have worked with a wide range of clients from preschool-aged children to elders in multiple settings. Whereas I love working with people of various identities, I specialize in helping Black Womxn (cis, nonbinary, trans) and LGBTQ+ folx recover from trauma. I absolutely love helping folx move past barriers so that they can live fulfilling lives. I am deeply honored to support the beauty that is within each person. My work is strengths-based and collaborative. Using EMDR, expressive arts therapies (e.g., music, art, writing), play therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, self-love, and community-care practices, I provide opportunities for people to see themselves as so much more than what has happened to them. Instead of living the smaller lives that trauma imposes, people with whom I work can create lives that are expansive, grounded and rooted in true values.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I offer a free 15-minute consultation that is optional. That consultation allows for us to introduce ourselves to help determine whether we are a good fit. I will provide an introduction to my services and explore what you are hoping to gain from therapy. During the intake session, I will review my practice policies. I will also begin the assessment process and encourage you to think about goals for therapy. I will use a few assessment tools to help me understand the challenges that you are facing, as well as your strengths and resources that can help address and reduce the effects of those challenges.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My greatest strengths as a provider are that I am compassionate, knowledgeable, collaborative, and respectful. I believe that the person is not the problem. The problem is the problem. I believe in the person's ability to rise above the things that they face, with internal strength and support from others. I believe in your ability to live a joyful life!

My treatment methods

EMDR

I have extensive experience helping clients who have experienced trauma, using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), as well has other treatment modalities. I have supported clients who have experienced childhood trauma, significant accidents, devastating losses, relationship difficulties, anxiety, panic and agoraphobia and school or work challenges. EMDR allows people to relate differently to painful memories and experiences so that they can heal and move forward with greater effectiveness and confidence.

Trauma-Focused CBT

I have used Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to support others to understand trauma and its impacts. TF-CBT helps folx develop and utilize coping skills, practice relaxation techniques and recognize, address and regulate emotions. I also help people examine and restructure their thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and re-tell their stories from an empowered place. This process helps the person to gain distance from the pain of their experiences to more effectively create the life they desire.

Narrative

I have been using Narrative Therapy for nearly 25 years. This modality speaks to me because of the ways in which it emphasizes that people are separate from and more than the problems they face. We are deeply impacted by the poignant narratives that limit us. But, we have the ability to frame our lives from a holistic perspective, one in which we highlight our strengths, values, and hopes. I support people to examine unhelpful narratives and re-write those narratives in a way that uplifts and grounds what the person knows about themselves. This is not only a powerful tool, but a comprehensive way of life by which the person embraces and celebrates themselves wholeheartedly.

Couples Counseling

I have been providing couples therapy for several decades. I use a elements of Emotionally-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and a strengths-based approach to my work with couples. I support couples to remember and re-invite what drew them together in the first place. I help partners identify mutual values, hopes, and goals, and develop specific practices to bring them closer together.

Racial trauma treatment

Whereas I am dedicated to supporting people of all genders, racial identities, and intersectionality, I am especially passionate about supporting Black Womxn, Girls and Queer Folx recover from trauma, including racial trauma. I have several decades of experience helping others recognize and acknowledge the impacts of micro-aggressions, as well as macro-aggressions. I support people to identify and articulate their needs, evaluate their environments and relationships, and explore ways to create the environments and relationships that best support them. Using principles such as Dr. Kenneth Hardy's Tasks of the Subjugated and the Community Health Network's work around debunking lies, I support Black folx and People of Color to exhale negative messages and embrace their beauty and magnificence.
