I’m Brandon, a licensed therapist based in San Diego, California. I am passionate about my work and deeply committed to my clients’ well-being and progress. With experience in helping individuals navigate a wide range of mental health and life challenges, I offer a pragmatic and adaptable approach to therapy that focuses on finding effective solutions for you and your family. I hold an M.S. in Counseling from San Diego State University, and have received additional training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and other evidence-based approaches to health, recovery, and personal growth. As a contributing author to the book Neurobiology and Collaborative Therapy (Routledge, 2016), I bring a decade of experience working with adults and adolescents in hospital, residential treatment, and outpatient settings. In addition to my private practice, I work several days a week in a hospital setting, providing treatment to adolescents and their families. My goal is to create a non-judgmental and comfortable environment where clients can openly share their challenges. I strive to support my clients while also encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones and overcome self-defeating habits. If you’re seeking a therapist who will both support and challenge you to grow, feel free to contact me today to learn more.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

A first session typically involves a client and therapist getting to know each other. I would typically ask about what brought you to therapy, your goals, and a little bit about your life history. I would also encourage you to ask a lot of questions about working with me. We might end the session by setting some guidelines related to working together and agreeing on some initial goals.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I balance accepting where you are now with encouraging you to grow and try new things. While my overall approach is collaborative, I can be direct and structured when needed. Clients have appreciated my flexibility and easy-going demeanor in sessions, as well as my ability to stay focused on making progress toward their goals.

My treatment methods

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is helpful in addressing a range of problems including substance abuse, depression, anxiety, or any pattern of unsafe or ineffective behaviors. By combining problem solving and acceptance strategies, as well as mindfulness and openness to experience, DBT can help people improve their quality of life and feel more in control of their emotions.

Narrative

Narrative therapy focuses on helping individuals recognize and detach from the stories (both internally experienced and outwardly performed) that contribute to the presence of ongoing problems in their lives. All people are capable of change, but often we may need to re-evaluate and reclaim our identity to jump-start the process. Narrative therapy also encourages us to examine the cultural and institutional influences that influence our lives in complicated ways.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Integrating mindfulness and Zen practice into therapy can promote self-awareness and increased acceptance of difficult thoughts, emotions, or reactions. Over time, learning to observe our inner experiences can lead to a deeper understanding of the root causes of our biggest problems. Mindfulness overall has been proven to improve quality of life over a range of health problems including those related to depression, anxiety, and trauma.
