Hello, I'm Chris. If you've ever felt like you've been alone in society and that you are experiencing a sense of stress related to societal expectations that are unrealistic or built for those who are in a group you feel you don't belong to, I may be a good fit for you. I approach my work with clients in a way that is culturally informed, focusing on feminist principles that are aimed at removing barriers that are in place while acknowledging the very real struggles of those who are not members of the majority group. I have an extensive history of working with individuals of various minority group backgrounds, but specialize and focus in working with people who identify within the LGBTQ+ community, including offering affirming services and helping people navigate coming out, family and peer relationships, and romantic and sexual concerns. I also have experience and training in gender-affirming services and seek to help clients discover and celebrate their true selves. While I specialize in the above, I am here to help anyone who needs it. Coming to therapy is often a scary experience but it is one that can be incredibly rewarding. I strive to provide a warm, comforting, supportive environment for you to be yourself and grow through whatever concerns you are coming in with. I look forward to working with you!
During my first session with new clients, we do some brief introductions and I'll answer any questions you have about the therapy process or what to expect. Then, I'll ask a series of questions about your background and what is going on at this time so I can build a good understanding of where you're coming from and what has been impacting your life. From there, we'll work together to start identifying some goals for the therapy process. Typically there isn't much time to talk about things other than my questions, but if there is I try to use the last part of the first appointment to send people off with a skill, strategy, or something to try between sessions.
I use a combination of approaches, tailored to fit each individual's needs. I use techniques, tools, and strategies from a variety of sources including CBT, DBT, trauma-informed, affirming, solution-focused, feminist, existential, and psychodynamic approaches. However, my general stance remains focused on understanding people in the context of their social and cultural positions in life. So, regardless of whatever approaches I use, I strive to make sure I approach any concern from a stance that is focused on your unique experiences and attempt to help you to find solutions to the problems you share in our work together. While some of our work may be focused on education about mental health or teaching strategies, tools, or techniques, my ultimate focus is always on you and what you want.
I have been told by many clients throughout my career that I am able to listen well and provide a space of comfort even when working on some of the most upsetting or distressing topics. I consistently strive to provide a space where my clients feel safe, comforted, and heard. In reference to my specialty and focus on a socially just, culturally informed practice, I believe it is my responsibility to provide the best possible services to my clients and that the best service comes from a place of understanding you as you are and where you came from in life. I also have a passion for working with those who come from underserved, marginalized backgrounds and helping them to achieve the fullest experience of their lives as is possible.
