I’m Maya Nelson, a licensed mental health counselor in Florida specializing in supporting BIPOC women and at-risk youth through trauma and anxiety. I use trauma-focused CBT, DBT, and internal family systems (IFS) to help clients navigate healing and build resilience. In addition to therapy, I advocate for mental health on TikTok and other social media platforms, creating accessible resources and discussions around mental wellness.
In our first session, you can expect a warm and supportive space where you can share your story at your own pace. We'll focus on understanding your background, current challenges, and goals for therapy. I’ll introduce the fundamentals of my approach, including CBT, DBT, and IFS techniques, while exploring what support and coping strategies may work best for you. This session is all about building trust, setting a strong foundation for growth, and ensuring you feel seen, heard, and empowered in your healing journey.
My greatest strengths as a provider are my dedication, adaptability, and deep commitment to my clients' growth. I approach therapy with curiosity and empathy, creating a space where clients feel heard, valued, and supported. I take great pride in my work, continuously learning from my clients and evolving my approach to meet their unique needs. My enthusiasm for mental health, combined with a strong foundation in trauma-informed care, allows me to guide clients toward healing and empowerment.
I work best with clients who are navigating the complexities of identity, relationships, and emotional well-being, particularly Black women and people of color facing anxiety, racial trauma, and life transitions. I also support individuals in the LGBTQ+ community, those managing PTSD, depression, and ADHD, and professionals struggling with workplace discrimination or burnout. My approach is collaborative and affirming, integrating CBT, DBT, and multicultural frameworks to address both internal struggles and systemic challenges. Progress is measured not only through mood changes and symptom reduction but also in clients' ability to set boundaries, practice self-compassion, and find empowerment in their personal narratives.
I use CBT to help clients recognize and challenge unhelpful thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, stress, and self-doubt. In my practice, I guide clients through cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and mindfulness techniques to develop healthier coping strategies. By addressing negative self-talk and reinforcing positive behaviors, clients gain greater emotional regulation and self-awareness.
I incorporate humanistic therapy by fostering a client-centered space where individuals feel heard, valued, and empowered. Through empathy, unconditional positive regard, and self-exploration, I help clients connect with their authentic selves. This approach allows clients to explore personal growth, develop self-compassion, and embrace their strengths in a non-judgmental environment.
I integrate multicultural therapy by acknowledging the systemic, cultural, and societal influences on mental health. My approach is tailored to each client’s unique identity, experiences, and values. By addressing issues like racial stress, cultural identity, and intersectionality, I ensure therapy is inclusive, validating, and relevant to their lived experiences.
I facilitate group therapy by creating a supportive and structured environment where clients can share experiences, build connections, and develop coping skills. My groups focus on topics such as anxiety, self-compassion, and racial identity, using CBT, DBT, and existential techniques. Clients benefit from peer support, accountability, and collective healing.
I specialize in racial trauma treatment by helping clients process the emotional and psychological impact of racism, colorism, and systemic oppression. Using a trauma-informed, intersectional approach, I incorporate mindfulness, somatic techniques, and narrative therapy to validate experiences, foster resilience, and promote healing.
