Hello, I'm Matt. I'm a psychologist with 18 years of experience. I've worked in a wonderful university counseling center for the past 7 years, and publicly-funded clinics working with adults before that, and am starting a new chapter in private practice. It's mind boggling to think back about the many people I've had the privilege of knowing and assisting. Now, I hope to help you, with my experience, training, and engaged self. I value the tradition of evidenced-based therapy practices, and being able to encounter people who are struggling authentically. We'll work together to explore that struggle, define it as much as possible, and see what can be done. I have the most experience with depression and anxiety concerns, and have worked successfully with people managing the range of disorders, including trauma, bipolar, psychosis, eating concerns, and OCD.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Firstly, I would like to hear about what has been happening with you , and what brings you to therapy. Our first session will probably be different from most other sessions because I need the information necessary to properly serve you. So, I'll likely ask more questions than usual questions about your history, your symptoms, timelines of those symptoms, your current circumstances, and what you want in the short and long term. If you prefer to have more time to talk freely during that first session, we can do that too, but I will need to follow up eventually. I don't want to miss critical points! I would also be pleased to answer any questions you have. Sometimes people want to know about my qualifications, experience, approach, how therapy works, our roles, expectations, etc. Near the end of the session, I'll likely give initial impressions of the situation, and see what you think. It is also important to me to check in with how you feel things are going, and if there is anything you would like to change moving forward.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I'm pleased that I have developed a good dynamic compromise between the professional role of a therapist, who needs to use expertise to make numerous judgement calls, and the more emotional and relational aspects of being a therapist, who should always respect your space, and your ultimate expertise on your own experience. As such, I'm comfortable both following your lead, and guiding the exploration and planning. I value your time, and will try to be as efficient, transparent and effective as possible, while also respecting your space and style. Lastly, I have a wealth of education and experience to draw upon, but I remain grounded in my training in psychological science.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

ACT is elegant and evidence-based treatment for many diagnosable psychological concerns, as well as personal growth. It's coping strategies and philosophy for the groundwork of my approach, which is applied to your unique circumstances over the course of therapy. ACT highlights exploration of your vision of what makes a life of vitality and purpose, validates the very real struggle to progressively realize that, and allows us to explore the "nitty-gritty" of how your vision becomes grounded in the everyday. ACT also uses elements of mindfulness processes in grounded and practical ways.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

My graduate training was primarily in CBT, and I've always enjoyed its eminently practical and well-organized systems, as well as is its extensive research base demonstrating that it truly helps people. CBT has been criticized as being dry, or overly mechanistic, and I like to keep therapy conversational, so you won't be hearing me spout theory (unless you request it), but working with me, you can rest assured that I'm working with a well-tested method. You can also be confident that I am actively conceptualizing your concerns, tracking progress, and that I will share these explicitly for your consideration.

Psychodynamic

I like that psychodynamic perspectives prioritize appreciating one's formative history, and go in to more detail about the subtle operations of the psyche than CBT and ACT, which I want to be able to register with you. Also, psychodynamic approaches resonate with me in that they see relationships, early ones, current ones, and the therapist/client relationship as highly important. Lastly, I feel that psychodynamic perspectives appropriately respect the complexity and mystery of individuals.
