Hello and welcome! I am Kerry Heinz, a licensed clinical professional counselor with 18 years of experience working with children, teens, and their families. If you are a parent, Let's just take a minute to acknowledge your decision to reach out. Parenting is no easy task. I began working in this field before having children of my own. Now, I see how blessed I was to have learned about child development and behavior strategies before raising children. I choose to share what I know to build parent confidence as you navigate through common developmental challenges and sometimes more significant mental health problems. We achieve this together through Parent training in behavior management, typically with your child present. Also, through one on one sessions with your child to help your child understand feelings, solve problems and build skills needed to improve behavior and relationships outside of sessions. Certain methods of counseling therapy have been proven to help with various problems. We will work together to identify your most pressing concerns and the therapeutic interventions that will be best in treating them. I look forward to meeting you and your family. If you are a teenager reaching out. Take a minute to acknowledge your decision to reach out instead of isolating or holding in the things that are on your mind. It's a great first step in improving your mental health! I look forward to meeting you at our first session to learn more about you. If you're reluctant especially if you think your parent wants you in counseling more than you actually want to be there please know many have been where you are and have found counseling therapy to be a supportive place that has actually helped. What it will be for you remains to be seen.
Our first session together, also known as an intake, will be a structured interview. This means I will be asking a lot of questions to better understand your concerns. We will look at the big picture and then narrow our focus to the issues that are most important to you. I tend to take a straightforward, common sense approach while providing education, support and encouragement through the various challenges you may be facing.
Providing hope and instilling confidence in parents as you navigate raising your own families is an overall goal I have in working with you. Thank you in advance for allowing me to meet your family. I measure success as parents feeling confident, children feeling a sense of pride, and parents being pleased with the progress they and their children have made. Let's get working together on making the changes you want to see.
I can begin addressing behavior problems and mental health concerns with children starting at the age of two through eighteen years old and their parents. For persons I have treated in their teen years, I am willing to continue to see, if needed, as they transition into college. My experience is extensive in helping with diagnosing and treating: Phase of life problems including coping with divorce of parents and life stress Common developmental challenges like not listening to parents, tantrums, dawdling, stalling, backtalk, anger and aggression. Anxiety Depression ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) ODD (oppositional defiant disorder) OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)
I have been practicing CBT for 18 years with children and parents. With this form of therapy you will learn to challenge thinking errors and change behavior that is holding you back from reaching your goals.
This treatment method is frequently used in session to increase parent and child knowledge during common developmental challenges as well as through diagnosis and treatment of various childhood mental health disorders. Including ADHD, Depression, OCD and ODD. Psycho education is typically combined with parent behavior management training to improve child behavior problems. This is typically accomplished with both parent and child present learning new skills to address concerning behaviors.
