Hello and Welcome! First, I want to thank you. It took a lot for you to seek a therapist in the first place. Just admitting to yourself that you're not feeling your best is difficult, but congratulations, you've made it past your first step! Asking for help can be hard for some people, so thank you for seeing something in me that makes you more comfortable taking your next step. Whatever brought you here, I want you to know that you are not alone and I will walk with you on this journey. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I grew up in a family of social workers which led me to the field. I grew up going to the nursing home my mom worked in as a geriatric social worker. Two of my mothers sisters were social workers and my great aunt was a therapist for delinquent teens. I have always had the instinct to help others and as I grew up I found that many people felt comfortable sharing things with me that they usually would say they never talked about. My amazement at the amount of traumatized people there were in my life turned into a fascination with the workings of the mind and body. My need to help others turned into a BSW, then an MSW, to an LCSW. Years went into study and licensing but still the subject does not bore me. I am excited to share what I have experienced and what I have learned while adapting the concepts to help others in the specific ways they need. We are all continuously learning and growing. I am excited to learn and grow with you as we discover how we will work best in the therapeutic environment together.
I know it is not our first response as people to open up to someone new about our past traumas, deepest secrets, or insecurities. Don't worry, we are just getting to know each other in the first session. I start with a conversational approach to help us both feel more comfortable. I may explain what therapy is and how it works if you have never been before. I may ask questions if you don't have anything you want to say right away, but they will be general ice breakers and background. I will go at your pace depending on what you are comfortable talking about or not. Ill meet you where you're at.
I admit I am human. Sometimes people feel uncomfortable in a setting with someone they feel is almost a figure of authority to them. I am not pretending to be anything more or less than who I am. I am here to help you, human to human. I may have some more knowledge in a specific area than you but I am happy to be open minded and learn as well. I am sure my clients, no matter if they are younger or older, all have a wealth of knowledge and ideas I can learn from. I will make mistakes sometimes but I will always approach it afterwards with acceptance, open dialog, and a little humor to lighten the mood. I am curious and want to help you as a team, You are the expert in all things You, I'm just here to add some insight into what tools you already possess.
I have been working with children, teens, and their families for years so I am well positioned to work on issues such as ADHD, anxiety, anger, depression, grief, trauma. I have worked with agencies and clients in an effort to reduce recidivism and increasing use of rehabilitation and community involvement to help our populations who have had any type of interaction with the justice system, as this is often a traumatizing experience for any party involved.
Ultimately, therapy is for you, the client. Given the right tools, we are all capable of anything. I am here to help you in the ways I can, but you are the expert on yourself. We are going to help you become an active participant in your own life and healing. No more feeling helpless, because we are working towards highlighting your strengths and actively problem solving issues that are directly impacting you and your life.
In the best way of describing my approach, its Eclectic. There are such vast schools of knowledge in the mental health field and not one can make the others null or void. It would take the years of schooling to explain all of the theories and approaches used in a single counseling session. Every session may take us down a different path of therapy modalities which I may or may not explain depending on how the session flows and your interest level in the research.
When working with clients I find the CBT approach to how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected to be helpful in explaining the mental health processes. Often times it is beneficial to challenge negative or unhelpful thought patterns. We may work on cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, I may provide insightful information or alternative perspectives to help us think through our issues.
I have worked in a number of settings with clients who have experienced traumas. I worked with Center for Children's Rights who worked with child offenders, I worked with Children of Inmates, and I've worked for several years in the school system providing trauma focused therapy to children and their families.
I have worked for years in an agency setting and I am a social worker at heart, so our first and foremost issue will typically be the current ailments in your life. You can be comfortable if you are battling issues in your daily life. Once we can solve the current stress we could look into causes and how to change patterns, but if all you want is a tune up or quick fix, we can start with some problem solving and end when you feel ready.
