Hello, and welcome! My name is Amber Stewart, and I’m a licensed professional counselor (LPC) out of Western Pennsylvania. I specialize in anxiety, self-esteem, depression, and trauma. I want to help you go from just tolerating the symptoms of your anxiety, depression, or trauma to living fully in the present. You deserve to live the life you envision for yourself, and I want to help you do that by exploring the areas you’re struggling with, teaching you ways to cope, and reducing the impact that these symptoms have on your life by addressing them at their core. I believe that underlying most (if not all) mental health concerns is some kind of trauma – and, there’s many studies that support my belief that trauma is connected to depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns. I invite you to learn more about my approaches to therapy, trauma, and trauma therapy by visiting my website: www.everystepforward.com I'm strong on empathy, open-mindedness, and curiosity, and I help those I work with use those same skills when looking at how their past shows up in the present. I use a mindfulness-based approach along with techniques backed by decades of research to help people manage anxiety and depression and improve low self-esteem and self-care.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During the first session, I'll take time to get to know more about you and your history. I'll also tell you about my practice, and we'll explore what direction may be helpful to go in. As a counselor, I will meet you where you are at and help you to plot a path of steps forward. We don’t go anywhere that you’re not ready to go, and I’ll be with you as long as your journey takes.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

As a trauma-informed counselor, I understand how the impact of trauma is different. Setting boundaries, practicing relaxation and self-care, managing emotions and reactions, and identifying blind spots are parts of counseling that I consider to be amongst my greatest strengths as a counselor. With depression, anxiety, and trauma, life can feel more like surviving than living. But, you don’t have to endure your symptoms without hope. Things can change. Even by looking for a counselor, you’re already taking steps forward to heal. That is progress! When you’re ready to take that next step, I would love to help you continue on your journey of learning, experiencing, and healing, using my training, experiences, and education to help you along.

My treatment methods

EMDR

I'm trained at the Intermediate level in EMDR through The Center of Excellence for EMDR Therapy, approved by EMDIRA. This type of therapy can help you to reprocess memories and events in your past that continue to have effects in the present. I also can use this approach to help you heal from low self-esteem, grief, and experiences from your upbringing. I use this method most often in my practice.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

I also practice from a mindfulness-based approach to help you learn to pay attention on purpose to the present moment. This can help you slow down, better regulate your emotions, and make wise-mind decisions using your logic AND emotions.

Psychoeducation

I can teach you about how trauma impacts the brain and about how your past affects your present. I like to provide plenty of information to help you develop insight around your concerns and also to allow you to make informed choices about your next steps.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

I can use IFS to help you learn about and connect with your younger parts that are burdened by past painful experiences and take over when they are triggered. This is helpful in increasing your understanding of your experiences and healing your past trauma.
