My name is Brandy Mabin, I am a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) located in Southern California. I have been working in the field for 15 years and have been licensed for 10 years. My approach to therapy is to provide a safe, open, non-judgmental space that facilitates positive change and growth while reinforcing each client's autonomy. I am very intentional about my treatment approach, ensuring that I am able to meet the client's individualized needs. I use a combination of modalities within treatment, including interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, strength-based therapy, solution-focused therapy, and mindfulness.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Our first session is very important. It's my chance to get to know you, including the circumstances that brought you to treatment. My goal by the end of our session is to better understand your current symptoms, stressors, strengths, supports, barriers, and overall functioning. I'd also like to explore your expectations for treatment and make sure I am the right provider to help you reach your goals.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I know therapy can be intimidating so I work hard to keep my clients at ease, making sessions feel more like a conversation. I am a direct provider and offer feedback during sessions to help provoke further thought and consideration. I also collaborate with clients on exercises to explore between sessions. Skipping from provider to provider and re-telling your story over and over again is one of the greatest client dissatisfiers. I am very open and honest about my tool sets, including when I think a client would be better served by a more suitable provider.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

Over the last 15 years, I have worked with several different populations in numerous settings (inpatient, outpatient, co-occurring, children and adolescents, adults, geriatrics, couples, and criminal justice) and found my true passion is helping empower women, especially mothers. I specialize in treating perinatal mood disorders such as postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety. I also enjoy working with clients navigating fertility challenges and/or pregnancy loss. I find joy in creating safe spaces for women to identify and navigate their challenges while harnessing their inner strength to live a happy and fulfilling life.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the core treatment modalities I use, which allows me to assist clients in identifying automatic negative thought patterns that often times contribute to negative perceptions. These negative perceptions can exacerbate situations and lead to feelings of angst, anger, sadness and helplessness. With CBT, I help clients learn to challenge their thoughts and substitute more adaptive, balanced thinking patterns.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

Solution Focused Treatment (SFT) is another core modality I use because it helps clients make measurable progress in the short-term. SFT helps clients shift their attention from their problems to attainable solutions. It empowers clients to use problem-solving instead of feeling powerless and helpless to their circumstances.

Strength-Based

Strength Based Therapy is a cornerstone of my practice because it reinforces that each client is an expert is their own regard and can use their existing strengths, abilities, supports and resources to overcome their challenges. Using this modality, I help clients improve their confidence to actualize their own self-awareness and self-determination.
