Hi there! My name is Garrett Ransom and I am psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. I love working with clients of all ages and to help them overcome whatever challenges they face. I will treat depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and many more. I do not see clients with ADHD or substance use disorder due to Georgia's strict prescribing laws. I am open to both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions. Often, the best approach is a little of both (medications and therapy). I received my Master's in Nursing from Vanderbilt University as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. Whatever your issues are, I promise a listening ear and a professional attitude.
Our first session will typically take an hour as we go through your history and what brought you to see me. I will listen and ask you questions to best determine what treatment will be optimal for you. There may be some assessment scales we will do together if they are appropriate. By the end of the first session, we will have a roadmap for your care that may or may not include medications. The important take away is that we work together.
My greatest strengths as a provider include a willingness to listen and comfort with ambiguity. I never want to dismiss lived experiences even if it is something unexpected or seemingly impossible. Psychiatry is really in its infancy because there is so much we do not understand about the brain. To be the best provider I can be requires a comfort with the unknown and a willingness to learn. I possess both of these traits and I hope you can see how that benefits you.
I will work with any client of any age to help them overcome whatever issues they are having. The only conditions I do not treat are ADHD and substance use disorder for clients in Georgia.
I have used Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy techniques to help reframe pressing issues. Many people develop what we call "cognitive distortions" where your perceived reality is much different from the facts on the ground. By re-examining these thought processes, we can unpack how your mind can play tricks on you.
Knowledge is power and the more we learn about these mental challenges, the better prepared we are to handle them. In my practice, we discuss what to expect with your mental health and how to navigate the world as someone with mental health challenges.
Many times I see clients who have lost confidence in themselves and struggle to see a path forward. To help clients recover their self-confidence, I use motivational interviewing techniques to help clear the clutter and build a path to a better future.
