New clients continue care with this provider

Hi! I'm April. Have you gone through a situation that caused you to feel stressed, exhausted, or overwhelmed? Are you rebuilding after a traumatic or painful event? Are you having a hard time finding anyone who understands what it has been like to be you? Are you struggling to feel like yourself again? I am a professional counselor with over 20 years experience. But more importantly, I am a real person who has lived through challenges too. I'm a mom of adult twin daughters, I love guitar, golf, remodeling projects, being outside, crafting and trying new things. I'm a former teacher, tattoo artist, singer in a rock cover band, horse trainer, and an overall goofball who loves taking risks and trying new things. I live my life on my terms. I believe that finding power in the things that make you "YOU" is the the key to mental wellbeing and recovery from trauma. I am not a perfect person, but I live an authentic life, and I'd love to help you live your best life too. I am a trauma survivor, have struggled with PTSD, depression, and anxiety, and have been through divorce. I'm an expert on trauma, relationships, depression, anxiety, and parenting. I like to think of myself as a master at rebuilding after struggles, and I use humor and compassion to help my people do the same. It's important to me that my clients feel like they are talking to a real person who has been there too. I may be an expert on mental health, but you are the expert on you. So come on in, pull up a chair, and let's team up to build up something amazingly "YOU" together. My areas of expertise include PTSD, trauma and abuse recovery, anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+, marriage/relationships, and parenting. I work with ages 14 and over.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

During our first session I like to review any questions you have about therapy and get to know you. I will ask you questions about any symptoms you are having and things that may be impacting those symptoms both past and present. We talk about anything that you think is important for me to know in order to understand you better. I tell people a little about myself, my approach, and what to expect from me as your therapist. We discuss the things that brought you to therapy, and we start to form a plan of what we are going to do as a team in order to help you reach your goals.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I have personal experience recovering from multiple traumas, including sexual assault, domestic abuse, emotional abuse and narcissistic abuse. I believe that my lived experience gives me a deeper understanding and connection to my clients. I am a very laid back and creative person with deep curiosity about myself and others. I like to look below the surface to find the "why", and I also like to joke and get to know what makes people feel happy and alive. I think that one of my greatest strengths is forming relationships with my clients, creating a connection where they feel comfortable and understood. I enjoy helping them find insight into their concerns and build up power. I have rebuilt my life after bad situations many times, my own life has not been perfect and I do not pretend that it has been. I love helping others do the same.

My treatment methods

Eclectic

I use a person centered and trauma informed approach that integrates CBT, IFS informed, and principles from Gottman theory. The techniques I choose to use are based on what my clients and I determine to be the best approach for their personality and needs in treatment. If one approach does not work, we discuss other ways of approaching their concerns together. Team work and collaboration with my clients about what works for them and does not work for them is very important to me.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

I am an "IFS informed" therapist. I have had multiple trainings on this approach but I have not pursued formal IFS certification so I do not call myself an IFS therapist. I integrate IFS into sessions when it suits the client's personality and interest in working with subconscious parts of their personality. Like any approach in my toolbelt, if a client does not find it helpful we explore other approaches that fit their needs and personality.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I believe that people have power already within them and that by helping clients explore who they are and why they do what they do, they can gain insight and understanding. Clients can then use that knowledge as a tool to make changes if and when they are ready.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use CBT to help people identify patterns of thinking that are getting in their way and causing more distress. I then help my clients challenge these patterns and find alternatives that fit more with their personality and personal values.

Gender-affirming therapy

I am supportive of people who are questioning their gender and supportive of helping clients live an authentic life.
